Job purpose:

To ensure the premises are secure, safe, clean and accessible as appropriate.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  1. Ensure that the premises are open for use as and when required in accordance with the specifications of the Governing Body, and securing the premises after use, ensuring all staff and students have vacated the site and all electricals are turned off.
  2. Assist in the organisation of annual and recurring programmes of maintenance, liaising with all appropriate parties on maintenance related matters.
  3. Ensure day to day security (including patrolling) of the premises, together with the contents; routine and non-routine opening of the premises and grounds; setting of alarm systems where provided and testing of Fire Alarms as required by the Principal.
  4. Undertake “spot” cleaning of the premises as required outside of the cleaner’s normal working hours (e.g. spillages, vandalism, breakages, etc.)
  5. Ensure that all rubbish and broken furniture is removed from the building and is taken to bins or to safe storage areas so that it can be removed as soon as is practicable.
  6. Undertake portage of goods and materials and the movement of furniture and equipment, taking delivery of goods and materials for distribution and storage.
  7. Ensure that all paths and parking areas are free from debris and hazards e.g. glass, leaves; that all drains and gullies are free flowing and clean, and that all outside areas are cleared or salted/gritted and safe in times of bad weather.
  8. Make regular inspections of premises and report any required repairs or maintenance work to the Facilities Manageras and when identified.
  9. Ensure that windows are cleaned externally in accordance with contract and internally in accordance with the cleaning specification.
  10. Ensure adequate supplies of appropriate toilet hygiene products e.g. toilet rolls, hand towels etc. are available, and for ordering supplies at the appropriate time.
  11. Prevent trespass on College grounds or premises, requesting proof of identify from unknown persons on site (referring to the Principal, other College staff or the police where necessary).
  12. Prevent the unauthorised parking of vehicles on the College sites.
  13. Report any failure of the heating plant promptly to the facilities Manager and ensure that if any failures do occur, the proper emergency procedure is initiated to provide heating for the College.
  14. Carry out authorised procedures in the event of fire, flood, burglary, accident or major damage, and to be aware of the location of the water and gas mains stop cocks and the main electrical fuse box.
  15. Undertake minor repairs in connection with building refurbishment and maintenance, within the competence of the Caretaker and satisfying Health and Safety, and hygiene requirements of the College.
  16. Act as keyholder for Hartlepool sites.
  17. Assist with work of a caretaking nature or keyholder responsibilities at other College sites as might be required from time to time by the Facilities Manager.
  18. Ensure that all equipment and machinery used by caretaking and cleaning staff is in a safe working condition and properly stored when not in use.
  19. Prepare the premises and site for after College activities and ensure the premises/site are prepared for normal College activity following the after College activity. Where this involves overtime working the appropriate payment will be made.
  20. Act as site monitoring officer in respect of cleaning operations at the College on behalf of the Facilities Manager, including the completion of checklists and certification documents.
  21. Supervise and direct the work of cleaners, and undertake associated tasks such as completion of timesheets, ordering of materials etc. and ensure that the premises are cleaned in accordance with the Cleaning Specification.
  22. Undertake COSHH assessments and risk assessments that fall within the remit of cleaning and caretaking work.
  23. Deal with enquiries from college staff, working contractors and the general public as appropriate.
  24. Act as Fire Warden during drills and in the event of an incident.
  25. Act as First Aider.
  26. Ensure that in your absence other members of the team have information to cover effectively for you.
  27. Participate in the Corporation’s staff review and development procedure and undertake relevant updating of skills and knowledge as appropriate.
  28. Ensure that the Corporation’s Health & Safety policy is adhered to at all times and take responsibility for general health and safety housekeeping within the post holder’s area.
  29. Any other duties reasonably commensurate with the nature and grading of the post, as directed by the Director, Principal or his designate alternate.
