Dear Parents,
The time has come to begin the much anticipated, Recorder Karate unit in 3rd Grade music! We will begin learning to play the soprano recorder in January. In order to do so, each child must have a recorder. There are several options for obtaining a recorder for your child. Please read these options and indicate your selection on the attached slip and return it to me with your payment in an envelope labeled with your child’s name by Friday, December 14th, 2012.
1. The first option is to buy a recorder from me. The recorders come with a storage case, cleaning rod and fingering chart and will be labeled with your child’s name. The price is $5.00 in cash, and includes the instrument, a carrying case, and the cost of shipping. Recorders will be distributed on Wednesday January 2nd, 2013.
2. The next option is to provide your own recorder for your child. You may use a recorder that you already own or purchase one, however, please be sure that the recorder is a soprano recorder with baroque-english fingering and is in good condition. I suggest the Yamaha Soprano Recorder YRS-24B, as this is the instrument I will be purchasing for the students. Please, no colored or clear recorders as they do not produce an optimum sound. Recorders should be brought to school on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013.
3. The last option is to borrow a recorder from me, free of charge. Recorders borrowed from me may be used for the duration of Recorder Karate and must be returned to me at the end of the year. Recorders will be lent out on a first come, first served basis. Students borrowing a recorder will receive it in a case labeled with their names.
All recorders will remain stored at school for the first several weeks of the Recorder Karate unit. Recorders will be labeled with your child’s name and kept in separate bins for each class. I will be providing workbooks for each student, which will also be kept at school for the first several weeks of Recorder Karate.
