Prizes

Adult:First prize: $400 cash, plus a bursary for an online or in-class course in the Vancouver Island University Department of Creative Writing and Journalism (a value of over $400). Second: $250, Third: $150

Youth: First: $250 cash, Second: $150 cash, Third: $100 cash

Junior:First: $ 75 Chapters gift certificate, Second: $50 gift certificate, Third: $25 gift certificate

Winners and finalists also choose from a selection of books donated by the Vancouver Island Regional Library.

Winners will be announced at a reception and reading on April 27th at 6:30pm at the Harbourfront Library, 90 Commercial St.,Nanaimo. All entrants will receive an invitation by e-mail to attend.Winners and finalists will be notified no later than oneweek in advance of the presentation. The results will be announced in a media release, as well as online at the Islands ShortFiction Contest website and in NAC’s weekly electronic newsletter and quarterly review. The first-, second-, and third-placestories in each category will, with permission of the authors, be posted on the Islands Short Fiction Contest website at isfc.ca. The winner of the Youth category will, with permission of the author, be published in the anthology In Our Own Voice – 2017 from Rebel Mountain Press.

  • Mailed entries must be postmarked no later than March 23, 2017 (see address below).
  • Hard copy entries may be delivered to the Nanaimo Arts Council by no later than 12 noon on March 27, 2017 (seeaddress and hours of operation below).

Entries

  • Entrants may submit as many entries as they like, with separate entry forms.
  • Each entry in the Adult category must be accompanied by payment of the $20 entry fee. Your story willnot be officially entered in the contest until the entry fee has been received. (See payment options below.) There is no fee for the Juniorand Youth categories.
  • Entries will not be returned.

Eligibility

  • TheIslands Short Fiction Contest is a regionally-focused competition intended to highlight the work of area writers. Submissions are accepted from residents of Vancouver Island and the northern and southern Gulf Islands only.
  • Entries must be previously unpublished and not currently under consideration in any other competition. Stories which have previously placed first, second or third in the Islands Short Fiction Contest may not be entered again.

Format

  • Email entries will be accepted in Word or pdf format. We encourage you to submit in electronic form.
  • Hard copy entries must be typed on one side of standard 81/2 x 11 paper.
  • Stories may be no more than 2000 words. Entries above the word limit will not be considered.
  • Type the word count on a separate cover page along with your name, address, phone number and email address.
  • Do not put your name or contact information on any other page of your entry.
