Maths for Life Volunteer Workshop Assistant

BACKGROUND

·  Cardboard Citizens makes theatre that effects change – personal, social and political – in the lives of homeless and marginalised people and in society’s perceptions of them. We:

·  Tell untold stories, in theatres and beyond, opening the company's unique insight into experiences of homelessness to general audiences,

·  Present plays performed by or with homeless people, to share experiences and problem-solve,

·  Enable participants to develop confidence, skills and qualifications through workshops, training and productions,

·  Support participants’ personal, practical and progression needs,

·  Work in partnership to promote our work and share expertise in participatory theatre and engagement across sectors,

Cardboard Citizens are recruiting a volunteer workshop assistant to support with the delivery of Maths for Life, an Entry Level 3 NCFE accredited course in functional maths. The course will be delivered in partnership with Thames Reach, Employment Academy, and take place at their offices in Camberwell.

The course will take place at Thames Reach, Employment Academy, 29 Peckham Rd, Camberwell, London SE5 8UA

Duration

20 sessions

Start date: Thursday 28th Sept 2017 5.30-8pm

End date: Thursday 1st March 2018 5.30-8pm

Objectives of the role

·  To support the smooth running of Maths for Life EL3 NCFE course.

·  To support the tutor and workshop assistant in all aspects of the delivery and monitoring of the course.

·  To assist learners in completing the learning objectives of the course and achieving an accreditation.

·  To attend and support all 20 sessions of Cardboard Citizens’ Maths for Life course at Employment Academy.

·  To help set up the space and clear the workshop space.

·  To take a register and sign in members.

·  To assist with general administration of the course.

·  To support learners to complete activities under instruction from the workshop tutor.

Skills / Knowledge required

Essential

·  An interest in working with homeless and ex-homeless people and performing arts.

·  A proven knowledge and understanding of Maths up to GCSE level.

·  Experience of supporting accredited courses or working in a classroom based environment.

·  An ability to motivate and inspire people to get involved.

·  Commitment to time-keeping and punctuality.

·  Patience and understanding for people experiencing complex needs.

·  A creative flair and confident approach to delivering activities.

Desirable

·  Knowledge of Entry Level Functional Skills courses.

·  An understanding of basic safeguarding of vulnerable adults.

This is an unpaid voluntary position. Successful applicants will be provided with a food voucher ahead of each workshop.
