Long-Term Goal Statement:

Our missionis to develop well rounded, independent and successful young adults acting as role models in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children and young adults from deprived areas in Bitou, South Africa.

-Continuous support of 400 children

Mentor Training:

-1 BIA staff member continues to attend FAMSA workshops for social development training-Belinda Coram

-Her FAMSA courses attended for 2016: Professional boundaries between mentor and child

-BIA mentors received in-house training on the following themes implemented in group sessions: Child abuse, Rots en Water, Self- worth and Self- reflection for 2016.

-Mentors offered ongoing academic support: Spelling Bee, Times Tables, Revision of exam papers

-4 mentors attended a morning workshop – basics in numeracy and literacy.

-Continued to grow and expand networking with other local social organizations which include Social Development, Child and Family Welfare, Bitou Municipality, SAPS, FAMSA

-BIA facilitated the monthly individual debriefing for mentors by external organization-FAMSA

-12 BIA monthly meetings were held to support and develop the social program of BIA

Health Care:

-15 students were transferred to the local clinics for health reasons.

Social support:

-Additional weekly counselling was given to the 400 children in the BIA program

-Parent support by organizing 8group sessions about entrepreneurship

-10volunteers since January who:

  1. Assisted with the homework classes in Crags and Kranshoek
  2. Assisted with English classes in Kranshoek
  3. Assisted during the swimming lessons
  4. Assisted group sessions at Kranshoek, Crags and Wittedrift High
  5. Organised their own projects, including sports classes, drum sessions, drama and art classes, teambuilding and life skills games
  6. Helped with life skills, extra reading, English, maths support andP.E. at Kranshoek and Crags
  1. Career guidance

-Individual Career guidance provided to all Gr 12 students at Plett Sec and Wittedrift High during individual afternoon sessions. Learners complete an online career guidance test followed by information session by academic coordinator

  1. School project support

-All learners in BIA received researched academic materials to complete school projects on a weekly basis

-All learners in BIA received the necessary materials-stationary, poster paper etc to complete the projects

  1. Mathematics support

-Given to grade 8 learners attending Wittedrift High by Susan Donald, given twice a week for 3 months.

-Given to grade 5-11 learners attending Wittedrift High by Susan Donald, given once a week for 2 terms

-Nathalie Cupido gives extra math for Kranshoek Plett sec students in grades 8+9. This class is also organised twice a week.

-Kumon lessons given to 9learners the whole year round

-Private Kumon tutoring for 3 months given to 1 Gr 12 learner at Wittedrift High

  1. Tertiary Education

-Supported a total of 30 students at University of the Western Cape, NMMU Port Elizabeth, SCC in George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn,StellenboschUniversity,Tsiba Eden Campus in Karatara, Future Flyers Academy, Ukupela Home based care training, Rhodes University, Eastern Cape Training Centre, Damelin Training, UNISA, Francois Ferreira Culinary Academy, NQTac training

-Supported 40students at Wittedrift High with school and hostel fees, transport, full uniforms, stationary and provided mentorship 3 times a week

-Tertiary applications for tuition and accommodation completed for 12 learners to tertiary institutions for 2016

-Organized for 1 tertiary student to attend a national university cycling championships held in Potchefstroom

-Organised 1 tertiary student to attend a 1-week interaction seminar in Port Elizabeth on business development

Continuing their studies through BIA are:

Merilene Hartley completed a Cabin Crew course through Future Flyers Academy in Cape Town and is currently taking to the skies!

CharneMajavieis completing her final year at UWC in Cape Town where she has studies a 4-year degree in Physiotherapy.

Donoline Aaron is in her 3rd year at NMMU Port Elizabeth doing a degree in foundation phase Teaching.

Alberto Wilskut is currently a 2nd year Accounting student at NMMU in Port Elizabeth

TarricDavids is a 2nd year student studying Accounting at NMMU in Port Elizabeth

Carey-Ann Davids is in her 1st year at Francois Ferreira where she is studying an international cooking diploma

Jo-Ann Seekoei is a 1st year student at NQTac college where she is studying a 3 year diploma in hospitality

Cameron Stuurman just graduated with his BsC degree in Anatomy at Stellenbosch and is currently completing his honours degree this year.

Ruduwaan Myburgh is completing his final year at UWC where he has studied a 4-year senior phase Teaching degree.

Leshwin Barnardo is completing his 3-year national diploma at the end of this year in Business Management.

Adija Hartley has commenced her 2nd year at NMMU in Port Elizabeth where she is studying an intermediate phase Teaching degree.

SiyasangeTenge (right) will be completing her BTech degree at NMMU at the end of 2016 in Human Resource Management. She has been studying there for the last 4 years.

ChandrePlaatjiesis currently busy with her practical training at Crags Primary. She is in her final “Educare” year at South Cape College in George. She has also started studying a 4 year Foundation Phase teaching degree through UNISA .

Mervin September is completing his final year of a 3-year Electrical Engineering diploma at South Cape College in Mossel Bay.

Asanda Gigi is in her final year where she is studying a 3-year Safety in Society course at South Cape College in Oudtshoorn.

Judy Mintoor is in her 3rd year correspondence foundation phase Teaching degree through UNISA.

Beugene Green commenced her 1st year at Rhodes University in Grahamstown studying a 4-year degree majoring in Journalism.

Shanice David's has commenced her 1st year at Stellenbosch University studying a BCom Accounting degree.

Deidre Barnardo commenced her 1st year of a 3 year BCom Accounting degree at Port Elizabeth University.

DanelleMajavieis in her 2nd year at UWC where she is studying a 5-year Law degree.

Cheston Pedro is studying a 1-year higher certificate in Business Administration.

Suleiman Krigais studying a 1-year higher certificate in Business Administration.

-Educational Outings

- Wittedrift High: (41 learners)- Lookout beach outings, playing games and swimming

- 5 outings with Kranshoek, Crags, Harkerville and Wittedrift Primary (137 learners in total) – Brackenburn Nature Reserve, where they went on a nature walk and were taught about the area.

- 10 Kumon children were taken to the movie house in George.

- 9 Kumon kids were taken on a trip to Robbergin Plettenberg Bay to hike and play on the beach.

- 2 outing for all the students at Plett secondary – on Central beach where they got more information on lifesaving, dangers of the sea and the work of NSRI.

-Bicycle project

10 balance bikes handed out at Kurland Crèche. Many bikes handed out at Kranshoek, Crags and Wittedrift.

-Learn to Swim

BIA Learn to Swim Program –Kranshoek Primary,35children (Grade 2 –4)

BIA winter swimming training – Kranshoek Primary, 11 children (Grade 2 – 4)

-Needle work classes

Wittedrift Primary (Gr 4,5,6 and 7)- class is organised every Thursday.

-Public speaking, drama and self-esteem group

Gr 4-7 Crags (25 learners)

-Art classes given to grade 2 – 4 learners in Wittedrift Primary. Presented by the mother of Penny Brooks

-Creativity classes: grade 4, 5,6 and 7 at Kranshoek Primary school. Organised by Nicolas Peart from England.

-Entrepreneur classes:2 times 4 sessions were already given by Nick and Penny to grade 8- 12 students from Plett Secondary in Wittedrift and in the Crags.

-Sport:

-Nippers: 14 BIA children took part in the Nippers club and 9 attended the SA National Champs in Cape Town.

-Water polo team: 5 BIA children were selected for the Plettenberg Bay Waterpolo team and 2 of those students selected for the Eden Water polo team.

- Netball: 1 BIA student selected for the Western Province netball team, 2 students selected for the Eden Netbal team

-Spelling bee competition: All the Born in Africa children from grade 2 to 7 received list of Afrikaans words in June 2016. On August 18th, we held our big competition at The Crags Primary where the children first had to fill in a written test and from there the top 4 per grade was chosen to get up on stage.Our first prize in each grade was a bike, second prize was a watch and the third one got a voucher for Pick&Pay.

-Time table competition in September for all the children at Kranshoek Primary, kids of grade 3 to 7 could compete. On Monday 12th September: first selection by a test in 3 minutes. The top 10 children of each grade who were selected to come to the semi finale on Wednesday 14th September. During the semi finale, we let the top 10 children fill in another, more difficult, test to select the top 4/ grade for the big finale on 20th September!

My dream in Africa project 2016.Internet at the WH hostel for 1 year, repainting a bedroom, Spur visit, chocolate factory visit, two students went to CT for the elections of SA Idols, bicycle dream, paintball, hand out 9 beds and beddings, Masibonge’s dream to record his own music, 5 Nipper children went to national championship and the aquarium, handed out 10 closets, going to the zoo (Jukani), hairsets for 8 children, toys for the children (skateboards, dolls, …), clothing voucher for 8 children, 13 beds handed out, 2 eye tests and glasses, 2 wooden houses were built.
  1. Kranshoek plot bought and started with building the BIA Kranshoek mentor classes.
  1. BIA rented two shipping containers to house the mentoring program in Kranshoek.
  1. Outside bedroom of the BIA house has been painted
  1. We received more than 750 visitors from The Blauwe Vogel
