2010 KAMP KUTTI-UPPI

Sharing with our Kamp Friends

This year we’re getting a head start on our Christmas quilts & having fun in the process! The plan is to EXCHANGE our blocks so we all come up with a really Totally Scrappy Christmas quilt. The pattern is very quick & easy. You’ll want to save all your scraps from the blocks & bring them to Kamp for some ‘mystery swapping’ for anyone interested. We never know just what might come about – you know how Kamp can be 

For the EXCHANGE you’ll make beforeKamp: 35(20 for baby size) blocks (don’t worry, they go fast! Total blocks you bring for EXCHANGE is total different blocks you’ll get back. I’ll need them to me at Kamp by Friday noon so I can get them sorted so we can get busy on our creations. REMEMBER to bring you scrap pieces & any extra ‘blocks’ you may end up with.

We’re hoping everyone will want to do the Lap size 35 blocks (57 x 75) but if you prefer something smaller the Baby size 20 blocks (48 x 57) will be listed here in ( ). IF anyone is interested in anything larger for personal use please let me know & I’ll give you info – up to King size (111 x 111).

It should be lots of fun – start now to find your Christmas fabric while it’s on sale!

LAP 57 x 75…….35 blocks set 5 x 7 (Baby 48 x 57………20 blocks set 4 x 5)

Your 9” blocks have will have a contrast strip sandwiched between a 5 ½” strip & a 3 ½” strip then the quilt is framed with a 6” border (or ??? see Border note below)

YARDAGE:

Assorted CHRISTMAS Prints: FAT QUARTERS 11(7)

(Choose a variety of small & medium scale prints. You can use scraps to add more variety if you wish – these WILL be very scrappy anyway!

CONTRAST (CHRISTMAS): ½ yd(1/3) - again you can just use scraps if you wish but recommended at least 20” to 21” so length of fat qtr.

BORDER & BINDING (still CHRISTMAS!): I think this is a toughie because we’ll have so much variety it’s hard to say WHAT you’ll want for a border. In my case, I didn’t make the border 1 solid 6 ½” wide strip – I broke it up between 2 fabrics I wanted to pull out of my quilt. However, the pattern calls for 2 yards (1½ yrds) for Border & Binding. My suggestion is that we all bring 1 or 2 different yards of CHRISTMAS fabric that you think you may want to use for border. Maybe you’ll use it or maybe you’ll want to SWITCH with one or more of our Kamp Friends.

BACKING: 3 5/8 yds(3 yds)

CUTTING:

  1. Assorted CHRISTMAS Prints:
  • Divide fat qtrs into 2 groups – make sure to include a variety of prints & colors in each group.
  • Strips are cut long length of fat qtrs (20” to 21”)

GROUP #1 = 6 (4) FAT QUARTERS:

From EACH fat qtr cut 3 strips 5½” x 21” for total of 18 (12) strips

GROUP #2 = 5 (3) FAT QUARTERS:

From EACH fat qtr cut 4 strips 3½” x 21” for total of 20 (12) strips

  1. CHRISTMAS Contrast:

Cut 9 (5) strips 1½” x 42” wof - then cut these in half at fold for total of 18 (10) strips

SEWING: ¼” inch seam allowance please

NOTE: Try to combine 2 different print sizes, types & values in each strip set.

  1. Stitch the 1 ½” CONTRAST strips to the 5½” assorted strips. Press seams toward CONTRAST strip. Strip set ‘A’ should measure 6½" x 21". Total of 18 (10) sets

(Don’t worry if you have extra strips – save them & bring to camp for ‘fun stuff’)

  1. Stitch 3½” print strip to 1½” side of strip set ‘A’ – making sure to use variety of combinations. Press seams toward 3 ½” strips. Strip set now measures 9½ x 21. Total of 18 (10) Strip set ‘B’
  1. Square the end of each strip set ‘B’ & cut 2 (two) 9½” blocks from each. Total 36 (20) blocks. (Save the large ends & extra block & bring them to Kamp for more fun!). NOTE: If completed strip set measures less than 9 ½” – please leave so each Kamper can square up as desired.

FINISHING:

Alternate VERTICAL & HORIZONTAL strip blocks until you have desired look. (see photo top page 1)

PRESSING:

Odd rows press seams to RIGHT

Even rows press seams to LEFT

Press all joined rows DOWN.

Add border/borders as desired & show us what you’ve got!!!

Hope you had fun!
