Assessment Project

1. The purpose of this assessment is to measure the physical fitness of males who live in my town.

2. In this assessment, I want to measure fitness of individuals of any gender, of ages 18+, and any ethnicity.

3. I am choosing to do this assessment because as a population, we are growing at a fast rate. I want to see how individuals match up in terms of their fitness, whether they are overweight or normal. The actual rating scale will be used as motivation to individuals who do not meet the minimum fitness levels, and for the individuals who surpass them, the scale will be used as a guide to maintain their fitness levels.

4. I have selected to choose different aspects of fitness and they are: Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular Endurance, Muscular Strength, Flexibility and Body Composition. I have chosen these 5 components because they are the key components to fitness. By measuring these components, I will be able to identify specific areas to work on in individuals and if applicable, find any trends that may appear in my town.

5.

·  Cardiovascular Endurance – I will measure VO2 max through the 1 mile walk test. They clients will complete the test and we will record their Heart rate, their time, their age and gender. This will allow us to determine their VO2 max score which we will compare to a standardized VO2 max chart.

·  Muscular Endurance – I will measure their repetitions on both the push up test and squat test. This will measure their upper body endurance and lower body endurance. When they complete their test, I will record their score and compare it to a standardized scoring chart to show them where they fall between very poor through excellent.

·  Muscular Strength – I will measure their 1 Repetition Max (1RM) through their handgrip strength. Having strong grip is important for daily functioning. I will use a dynamometer to measure their scores and compare to a standardized strength chart to show them where they fall in the scale.

·  Flexibility – I will measure their flexibility through a sit and reach test. This will measure their flexibility in their hamstrings and lower back (which is a common problem in today’s society) and I will compare their results to a standardized score chart to show them where they fall in their fitness levels.

·  Body Composition - I will measure their body composition through a skin caliper. This will measure the thickness of fat in specific areas of the body. I will use this information in a formula to calculate their percent body fat which will then place them in a standardized score chart.

6. The test administrator will require some minor training in first aid (if anyone got injured), proper form of squat/push-up, and how to properly use a skin caliper without hurting the clients.

7. Once I calculate the results, I can then determine whether they pass the specific areas and then determine whether they pass all together or need improvement. Each section will be 20% of the grade. And for each individual component, depending on how many classifications there are will determine how they place, (ex. Excellent – 100%, Average 40-60%, Poor 0-20% etc). This testing will be formative as it will show the clients what they are excelling in and what they are lacking in.
