JOB TITLE:Information Technology Manager

RESPONSIBLE FOR:Computer Office staff, IT sub-contractors

Peterhouse, founded in 1284, is the oldest of the Cambridge Colleges. It has a student body of around 400 (undergraduate and graduate) and academic and administrative staff numbering approximately 100.

1.RESPONSIBILITIES

The IT Manager has responsibility for the management and development of the Peterhouse IT systems, under the overall strategic direction of the College’s IT Steering Group. This includes the main College management information systems and networks, College PCs, servers and other College-owned hardware. The post-holder also provides an appropriate level of support for PCs and other devices owned by students and Fellows. The post-holder line manages two full time members of staffand hires in specialist IT sub-contractors as reasonably required.

The College is in the process of implementing the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) which will have a major impact on the organisation and management of electronic data within the College. The College has also recently upgradeda number of key College management information systems, including the main financial accounting system, website and intranet, and significant further development of these systems will be required in the next few years. The IT Manager will be required to provide extensive support to these projects. This will involve a high level of interaction with relevant College staff, external contractors and Fellows.

The IT Manager will also be expected to take a lead on any new IT projects in the future and provide a high level of input to the strategic discussions of the IT Steering Group. The College recognises the growing importance of high quality management information systems within a College environment and wishes to take a forward-looking approach.

2.DUTIES

  1. To oversee, plan, monitor and manage the development of the College’s computing facilities, including installation of new systems as appropriate. This will be done with strategic input from the IT Steering Group, Bursar and Computer Steward.
  2. To lead, manage and develop the IT team to include conducting or arranging supervision, appraisal, training and recruitment as required with support from the HR Manager.
  3. To monitor the financial management related to the purchase and maintenance of IT and liaise with the Bursar concerning the overall budget for which the post-holder is responsible.
  4. To manage, maintain and upgrade existing equipment and software for both office and academic computing, including fault diagnosis and rectification, day-to-day servicing and maintenance as necessary.
  5. To manage and develop the administrative IT system and other local projects, for example, the accounting systems and conference systems
  6. To manage, maintain and monitor the College network, including both wired and wireless Ethernet systems, IP-based security and access control systems and IP telephony.
  7. To track requests for support through a ticket system so that: (i) all requests are logged in busy periods work is prioritised by importance; (ii) users may check the status of their requests; analysis may be performed to determine if action needs to be taken to address systemic issues; (iii) projects can be undertaken to improve the quality and functionality of IT services delivered in consultation with the Computer Steward; (iv) metrics can be produced on the volume of work requests and responsiveness of the IT team to deal with these issues.
  8. To be aware of and protect College systems from security threats, particularly network-based ones and to be able to respond appropriately to security incidents. This includes liasing with the University CERT as appropriate.
  9. To liaise with other areas of the University and the relevant media to ensure that the College is kept abreast of developments both within the University and in the wider world.
  10. To maintain and develop the College website infrastructure and access.
  11. To provide local documentation, user guides, information and instructions for staff , Fellows and students.
  12. To arrange support and training in any IT requirement for any student staff member or Fellow.
  13. To ensure that Health and Safety regulations are observed at all times and to undertake risk assessments.
