Smithfield Middle School is proud to announce that two students were selected from among the 1000 students who auditioned for the District VIII Chorus. Seventh grader Rachael Stambough earned a seat in the All-District Chorus, whileeighth grader Lauren Peters was selected as a First Alternate. The District VIII Choruswill be perform February 13, 2010 at Warhill High School.
Jeremy Utt , a math and algebra teacher at Windsor Middle School, recently received Kappa Delta Pi’s Teacher of Honor status. To earn the Teacher of Honor, an educator must have more than 3 years of classroom teaching experience, submit evidence of professional development, leadership, community service, and meaningful contribution to the education profession, and demonstrate a commitment to integrity and high standards in the classroom.
Windsor High School students Megan Joyner and Amanda Pezzuto have been selected to participate in the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars Program. This program's application and selection processes are highly competitive and rigorous. The scholars are immersed in real world aerospace experiences that build STEM-content knowledge and skills in addition to exposing them to a range of available careers through interactions with scientists, engineers, and technologists at Langley Research Center in Hampton. Each student will also engage in 150 hours of online coursework.
The VCU Winds and Percussion Festival involves high school band students from all over Virginia. Students are selected and recommended by their band director. This year the following students from Windsor High School have been recommended and selected: Senior: Clarissa Saunders, Percussion, Senior: Brandon Tolson, Clarinet; Freshman: Aaron Weisenburger, Trumpet.
The Carrollton Elementary Chorus took First Place for their float entry in Smithfield's Christmas parade in December. Eighty students and staff members participated in the parade as the Carrollton Elementary Singing Penguins.
Congratulations to the Smithfield High School Marching Packers. On Saturday, December 12, the Marching Packers won the1st place trophy for high school marching bands in the Smithfield Christmas Parade. That same evening, the Packers went on to take 3rd place for high school marching bands in the Hampton Holly Days Parade. The win in Hampton earns them a trophy and $100 prize.
A number of members of the Smithfield High School varsity football team made the All District and All Region teams this years. First Team Offense All District – Travon Tynes, Derek Caldwell, Montrell Johnson, Second Team Offense All District – Zack Emerson, Saquon Moody, Lamonte Baldwin; First Team Offense All District – Boden Fuller, Rohn Springfield, Lamonte Baldwin, Second Team All District – Cameron Diggs, Calvin Martin. Defensive Player of the Year – Rohn Springfield. Bay Rivers Coach of the Year Tyris Hill. 1st Team All Region Players - Running Back Montrell Johnson and Lineback Rohn Springfield. Player of the Year - Montrell Johnson.
