This seminar gives practical guidance on construction project administration, field management, and claims avoidance. Hundreds of participants have saved time and money on their projects by applying the principles and techniques set forth in this dynamic seminar. In one intensive day, you will follow the construction process from the preconstruction phase through project closeout, learning procedures, contract provisions, and rules of conduct that will help minimize and resolve claims and disputes. Information technology tools that can be used to assure a smooth flowing project will also be discussed.

Particular attention is paid to the claims sensitive areas of communication between owners, architects, engineers, bidders, contractors, subcontractors and other concerned parties. The presentation will cover the interrelation of laws, contracts and specifications, as well as the hierarchy of plans, specs, standard drawings and oral directions. The presentation also cover the important areas of onsite responsibilities, standard records, documentation and reports, including safety practices, and reports. Special attention is also focused on the handling of changes during the bid phase, change orders during the construction phase, payments to contractors, claims, project closeout, and protection against liens and stop notices. Change orders, extra work, claims and disputes and the role of partnering will be covered thoroughly. Proper project closeout techniques, and standard lien protection practices will be presented. with emphasis on a strong way to finish a project and leave a good impression.

The seminar is lecture/discussion format and includes numerous court and board of contract appeals cases as well as case studies that illustrate many of the seminar’s key points.

PRESENTER

James McMinimee, S.E., owner of JMC Consulting, retired from the Utah Department of Transportation in January 2010 as Director of Project Development and Chief Engineer. Jim has a BS from the University of Utah. Jim is known for his work with UDOT to speed project delivery. During his time with UDOT, UDOT pioneered A+B contracting, completed over $2.5B of Design Build and Construction Manager General Contractor (CMGC) contracting, and implemented Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). He received two AASHTO presidents’ awards for ABC implementation and Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) deployment. Jim served as the Director of Olympic Operations for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Games, and was a recipient of Engineering News Record’s top 25 Engineers in the News in 2009. Jim currently works with AASHTO on the deployment of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) and teaches seminars for ASCE.
