I hope that everyone enjoyed their summer break. We welcome all those new to the group this term especially our new Beaver leaders Liz Hall and Nick Horton. We now have two Beaver colonies one on a Monday and one on a Friday evening.

We are also pleased to welcome Chess dads, Dan Chaytor and Steve Moulder as new members of the scout exec. We would love to have representatives from the two cub packs and from Thames scout troop on the exec.

The work of the group executive includes

·  the maintenance of the Group’s property and equipment

·  the raising of funds and the administration of the Group’s finances

·  the insurance of persons, property and equipment

·  Group public occasions

·  assisting with the recruitment of Leaders and other adult support

We normally meet two evenings a term on a Wednesday night. Please contact me on 01923 283745 if you are interested.

Unfortunately, as you know, Village Day had to be cancelled but thank you to all those parents who volunteered to help. Your quick response was much appreciated.

Chess Scouts and the Explorers have both been away on summer camps. I am very grateful for the reports from Paul Sutton the Explorer leader and Molly and Kirsty, two of our Chess scouts.

In August we were pleased to welcome Benjamin Mills from Vancouver. His mother was a former venture scout in Chorleywood. Two our explorer scouts were able to give him a tour of HQ.

Well done to all those who took part in the sponsored bike ride on Saturday. There will be a report in the next newsletter.

We have a busy term lined up so make sure that you get all the dates listed below in your diary.

Explorer Report Pembrokeshire (Paul Sutton)

For our annual camp the Explorers took part with the District Explorers in a camp at St David’s on the Pembrokeshire Peninsula. We enjoyed a week’s good weather with sun burn being the main problem we had to deal with on our beautiful cliff top campsite. All members completed an overnight expedition of 1 or 2 nights for their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Other activities included:

·  Rock climbing on the local sea cliffs.

·  Coasteering which involves traversing along the coast with a mixture of climbing and swimming while jumping from various heights into the sea.

·  Kayaking on the sea, a mixture of surfing and rock hopping in and out of the caves that can only be reached from the sea.

All enjoyed a really good trip.

Summer Camp 2012 - Buddens, Dorset

This year was my first time going to summer camp and it was great fun. We had several annoying songs that cropped up a lot during the week, to all the boys’ and leaders’ annoyance. But on the activities we had no time for them as we had to work our brains and face our fears in order to have fun (and win!).

The first activities we did were bridge building, crate stacking and tunnelling. We did the activities in our night patrols, the people we shared tents with, so I was with the rest of the girls. I did bridge building first, when we made two A frames and tried to walk across the rope bridge we made. In crate stacking we broke the site record of 19 with 20, but the boys said they got 22. In tunnelling there was one tunnel which ended in a very deep puddle. I later found out it was full of living, and quite big, water beetles. On Wednesday we went on a hike to the beach which took us about two hours longer than it should have - the girls, not the boys. We were supposed to bivvy out but the weather wasn’t good so we got the minibus back. When we started it was freezing and wet, so we had lots of extra layers on, but it cleared up in the afternoon.
On Thursday we hiked from where we left off on the beach and took a ferry across a small space of sea. We walked to a water park and went on the flumes. They were great and we all got certificates which showed which rides we went on and how many times we did them. We then went to see fireworks on the beach which were spectacular. On Friday we did orienteering - which most of us completed except a certain few. We then bivvied on a nearby field. On Saturday we went to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove and walked up and down a large hill in between the two. We then went shopping and all had a large ice-cream before heading back to camp. On Sunday we got up between 6 and 6:30. We packed up and had breakfast before heading home. We stopped on the way to do a high ropes course when some people did The Mega Tower and some people did The Gladiator Challenge. Then came the next two hours of agony home to Chorleywood (the girls didn’t get tired of singing the really annoying songs).

Scout camp was really fun! I was really excited before I went. I was in the Wallace & Grommit patrol with Alex, Alex, Tom and Joe. I was in a tent with the girls: Lucy, Lucy, Kirsty, Alex, Jennifer and Jenni.
When we arrived we had to walk 3 miles into camp - thankfully without our bags! We did lots of activities during the week such as: pot holing (one of my favourites); crate stacking; bridging; and much more.... hiking, orienteering, swimming, etc!
The Scout banquet was delish! The girls also made up a song called 'The Banana' and we learnt a song called 'The Llama song'.
The leaders were very nice and they taught us a lot: e.g. I learnt how to make a cooked breakfast. I enjoyed Scout camp loads and am looking forward to (hopefully) going next year!!!

Murder Mystery Dinner Saturday 6 October

We are pleased to announce that we have again secured the services of Rickmansworth Players who are presenting a Murder Mystery Evening. This is a great night for the bargain price of £15.
