Pupil Premium Consultation

The pupil premium is money allocated by the Department of Education. Pupils are eligible for pupil premium money in 2013-2014 if they have received free school meal at any point in the last six years. Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and a smaller amount for the children of service personnel.

Each child receives £900. The most common use of the Pupil Premium in school across the country was to fund existing or new staff, who were often involved in a range of one-to-one or small-group tuition provision. Where academic potential is not perhaps being met extra tuition may be set up. Schools also commonly use the Pupil Premium to provide a wider range of curriculum opportunities such as after school clubs or curriculum enrichment.

Below is a chart which demonstrates some of the potential ways schools have used the pupil premium money.

‘What is the Pupil Premium funding being used for in your school?’ (all responses)

Although in the chart staff were the most commonly used way of spending pupil premium money, it is also the most expensive. £900 roughly equates to less than 2hrs per week per year for a teaching assistant.

As a school we look closely at each potential method for spending the money and what the impact on children may be. This impact must be significant. Some of the ways this could be measured are; increased academic standards, greater attendance at after school clubs and participation in sport or building self-esteem and confidence in a particular subject in school.

Although school will formally make the decision as to how the money is spent in each individual case, we are seeking your feedback. Specifically in relation to where you may see your child’s greatest need (academic, social and emotional or participation). Inside the envelope that you received should be a questionnaire. If you could fill this out and return to school by 4th October, we will consider any and all responses and write back to explain how this money will be spent for 2013-2014.

I appreciate the time it takes to complete the feedback but wish to be completely transparent with parents as to how this additional funding is spent.

Many thanks

Steve Ellis
