Vianney Basketball

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THE GRIFFIN BASKETBALL PROGRAM?

YOU WILL BE TREATED WITH THE RESPECT AND CARE YOU ASSOCIATE WITH ST. JOHN VIANNEY HIGH SCHOOL.

We are dedicated to making your experience a positive one. We are committed to using basketball as a tool to help you grow personally and athletically.

HOW WILL THE FINAL ROSTER BE DETERMINED?

THE FINAL ROSTER SIZE WILL BE 10-14 PLAYERS.

It is never easy selecting players for a team. As a coaching staff, we will give you a fair, honest chance to make our team. However, not everyone will make the final cuts. Putting a team together is like putting pieces together in a puzzle. We are looking for the right match of players. This means that we look at a player’s ability, attitude, physical condition, and work ethic. Our practices are designed to be quick-paced with high-intensity. We need players who can meet those expectations.

Each player will be evaluated individually. Due to overlapping seasons, some players may be released from the team before others tryout. Each player trying out will be evaluated based upon their individual basketball skills and the assessment by the coaches of how those players fit into the schemes and philosophy of offense and defense. Players will not be compared to one another for purposes of evaluation and earning positions on the team

As final cuts are made, we will sit down with each player and give each player an honest assessment as to why he did not make the team.

HOW IS PLAYING TIME EARNED?

PLAYING TIME IS EARNED DURING PRACTICE!

We will evaluate all of our players on the practice field. In order to remain a member of our basketball program, each athlete must meet the expectations of the Varsity coaching staff on a daily basis. Those who demonstrate the highest level of achievement at their position will earn the privilege of being a starter. Athletes will participate in games based on their ability to perform given responsibilities and compete effectively against our opponents. NOT ALL ATHLETES WILL PARTICIPATE IN EVERY GAME.

GRIFFIN BASKETBALL FACTS

·  Our Certified Athletic Trainer, Tim Trupiano, is on hand for all of our practices attends all of our home games. He is available to assess injuries and give treatment to all of our athletes.

o  You will be provided with the best possible care while he is on our campus. To meet this goal, we must know of any existing medical condition, which may impact him during the season. We require any injury to be reported to your head coach as soon as possible.

o  An injured athlete is expected to attend practice to observe and to participate in his rehabilitation program.

o  Please consult with our trainer and your coach prior to going to see your personal physician/pediatrician. Our training staff can recommend doctors who specialize in treatment of athles.

·  All athletes must have a physical on file in the school office. The file must be dated no further back than February of 2014. If you don’t have a physical on file, you will not be allowed to practice.

·  Every athlete who meets the criteria of attendance and behavior will complete the season as a member in good standing of the Griffin Basketball Program and will receive a Vianney Varsity letter.

·  We are members of the Metro Catholic Conference. We play a home and home series every year with the other members of our conference: SLUH, C.B.C., DeSmet and Chaminade.

·  Our schedule consists of 14 regular season games (including the conference games) and 3 tournaments (Vianney,Meramec, Shawnee Mission). We will participate in shootouts at Mizzou Arena and O’Fallon Illinois.

·  At the end of the Varsity regular season, we will participate in the Missouri State High School District Basketball Tournament. The winners of each district advance into a 16-team tournament for the state title. Vianney will play in a district with CBC, Kirkwood, Parkway South and Rockwood Summit. This year, the district tournament will be hosted at Vianney.

·  Practice times will vary—sometimes we will practice immediately after school, sometimes we will practice later in the evening.

·  As the game of basketball has evolved, it has become a game that is quicker and more physical. As a result, strength training is very important and our team will lift weights two-three times a week through the course of the season.

·  When we practice in the evening it is strongly encouraged that you find a quiet place to study and complete your course work. At times, if the coaching staff deems it necessary we will hold mandatory study halls after school for specific individuals or for the entire team. Determination for mandatory study halls will be based on team members’ academic performance and behavior in the classroom

Other Items for your consideration:

·  Basketball is going to be your priority behind your faith, family, and school— jobs, other sports, social life, girlfriends all on back burner.

·  We will practice six days a week during the season.

·  You are expected to be at practice 30 minutes before scheduled practice time and the team will meet 15 minutes before practice begins

·  We will practice on Sundays in the afternoons through the season

·  Carry yourself in the right manner—be a leader. People are always watching you.

·  Conduct your academic business and social life as if you are in our uniform.

·  You represent your coaches, teammates, and school at all time

·  Follow training rules:

o  Healthy diet

o  No cigarettes, drugs, alcohol

o  We need you to be 100% all the time

·  If you are sick and can not attend practice you must notify your coach (Varsity: Coach Walsh and Sophomore: Coach Biggs). Do not text that you are sick. You call or your parents call.

·  If you go home sick from school, communicate to Coach Walsh that you will not be at practice.

·  We plan practices based on your attendance and when guys are not there, it throws our plans totally off.

·  For those playing a fall sport, we will root for you to advance in the state playoffs, however, please know that the further you go in the play-offs, the sooner we will need you to come back to practice when your season is over. We may set our roster and then give you a chance to tryout.
