To search the OSH UPDATE database, select from the following search options:

  • Simple Search - simple to use, search all fields
  • Advanced Search - more powerful, search by field and use combinations.
  • Command Search - maximum flexibility and search options

Simple search

OSH UPDATE will by default search all of the databases for your strategy.
If you wish to limit the search to a subset of the databases,
please tick the databases to use below.

Some example searches

1. You may wish to a search for the latest information

Click on the databases you wish to search or just leave to the default

NB the BSI Standards database is completely update each update

Just click on the box in the left hand column - the Fields
and look for UPDATE DATE and in the Search terms box enter the dates
- year and month in figures 200608

Scroll down the list to see the latest information in journals, reports, conference proceedings etc

If you wish to see just click on the title - here you will find details and very often an extensive abstract…. And a URL to link to full text

2. You may wish to a search for a Subject and year - e.g. the latest on asbestos and 2006

Go to database list click on all except the BSI standards, then

Just click on the box in the left hand column - the enter All terms

then in the Search terms box enter asbestos and 2006

The first item is

Report of the Committee on Safety and Health. International Labour Conference, Provisional Record, 95th Session, Geneva, 2006

Look at the abstract and you will see information about asbestos (not in title of the document)You will also see the URL linking to the full text of the document

3. Searching for an Author
you have a choice - go direct to Author Field or put all Fields

by putting search in All Fields - you will most likely get more results….

e.g. Takala (no initials or first name….)
see list - first reference give links to full text but also note that if no initial
more records appear .. put in Takala, J
4. Searching for a Journal title to see if indexed
you have a choice - go direct to Journal Field and put in Search Box "Accident Prevention"
OR go to Journal Name in Fields and put in the first few letters e.g. acid
in the SEARCH - restart index and you get 1036 records so you know the amount out indexing that has been done

5. Searching, keeping, printing etc

Go to Context Help on the tool bar and this give you all the answers.
You have choices in searching ….

Simple
Advanced; Search Forms; Search Field; Loading Saved Searches; Saving Searches; Renaming Searches; Index Browser.
Command
Expert search allows you to perform comprehensive searches step by step, with every step showing how many records have been retrieved. Multiple search terms or step can be combined using Boolean operators (and, or, or not) for more complex searching.

6. New services @ low costs from OSH UPDATE

  • You will need to email your users that the latest update is now available
  • Printing copies and posting - very costly for posting and printing
    but you might be able to persuade users to pay a subscription (or you could try and get a sponsor for the Newsletter
