Bridleways Research & Development Officer

Essex Bridleways Association, a long established charity, wishes to appoint a full or part time person to undertake work that will culminate in an increase in the amount of off-road riding available to horse riders in Essex.

The role could entail:

1.  Researching old maps and records to identify any ancient routes and submitting claims to ECC to have these routes added to the Definitive Map.

2.  Assisting riders wishing to claim routes using the 20 year use rule.

3.  Creating new routes through negotiation with landowners.

4.  Monitoring major planning applications and highway schemes for possible inclusion of bridleways.

5.  Following up potential new bridleway schemes with various bodies such as ECC highways, local planning authorities, Natural England, Sustrans etc.

6.  Liaising with other rights of way organisations such as the Ramblers, Sustrans to ensure a co-ordinated approach to any initiatives.

7.  Drawing up a network plan for Essex, identifying missing links and attempting to find ways to fill the gaps.

8.  Applying for funding/grants to assist with the above e.g. lottery funding , paths4communities.

9.  Be the focal point of contact for all EBA area reps and provide assistance and training as necessary.

This position would ideally suit someone who has worked within a Highway Authority Definitive Map Team or Legal Services Dept and has experience of Rights of Way law.

The work will entail close liaison with members of the Association, the local authority and Record Offices in Essex. A high degree of self-organisation, motivation and good negotiating skills are required.

There are no set parameters for the terms of engagement and we would be happy to discuss timescales and rates of pay with the successful applicant. It is intended that the work will be carried out on a self employed basis or under contract and these arrangements will be part of the discussions that ensue with the interested applicants.
