MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ –In conjunction with the Mountainside Newcomers’ Club town-wide garage sale on Saturday, Sept. 19th (9 am – 2 pm), the Mountainside Restoration Committee will participate with a huge yard sale to raise funds for the restoration and maintenance of the historic Hetfield House and Levi Cory House. The Committee is asking the community to donate saleable items for this sale. So, if you need to clean out your stuff and don’t want to hold a garage sale of your own, bring it all down to the Hetfield House and the Mountainside Historic Committee will sell it for a good cause. Donated saleable items can be brought to the Hetfield House on Thursday (9/17) and Friday (9/18) between 9am and 4pm. Receipts are available for donations.

In the fall of 2013, Mountainside’s Historic Levi Cory House (circa 1812) was moved from its original location on the corner of Mountain Ave. and New Providence Road to make way for commercial development. Since then, work has progressed steadily on the Levi Cory House. Currently,Gary Wagner, a Mountainside carpentry contractor, has been working on rebuilding the soffits and returns around the perimeter of the old roof in preparation for the new roof. He will next work on replacing the missing sill across the back of the house. The masonshave finished the chimney brick work. Once the roof carpentry is complete, the new roof will be added. In the meantime, the Committee is contemplating paint colors for the exterior keeping in mind that the Levi Cory House, when restored, will become a Museum forChildren'sInterests.

In 1892, this house owned by Levi Cory, was rented as a summer retreat for inner city children. Many of those children arrived in need of medical attention, prompting the early volunteers to designate the home for children in need of medical care calling it “The Children’s Country Home”. After relocating to a larger facility on New Providence Road, the Children’s Country Home was renamed “Children’s Specialized Hospital” in the 1960s, and is now the largest children’s rehabilitation hospital in the country. Funds are needed for the restoration of the historic Levi Cory House which is the original Children’s County home.

The Deacon Andrew Hetfield House and Levi Cory House are located at Constitution Plaza adjacent to the Mountainside Library. Constitution Plaza is the first right off Birch Hill Road which is off New Providence Road near the Mountainside Volunteer Fire House. The Mountainside Restoration Committee is a committee of volunteers governed by the Borough of Mountainside whose purpose is to restore and maintain the Deacon Andrew Hetfield House and the Levi Cory House and collect and save historic information and items from destruction.
