Job purpose
To provide operational support and local advice to ensure a safe working environment for all staff and students working in the Departments of Biology & Biochemistry and Chemistry.
To ensure compliance and keep up to date with University policies and to work in collaboration with the University Health, Safety & Environment Service (UHSE) to promote a positive Health and Safety culture within their area of responsibility.
To disseminate the necessary information, instruction and training produced by or in consultation with UHSE to enable departmental staff and students to perform their work in a safe manner, and encourage and support their attendance at relevant University and external safety training events.
Principle areas to be supported are in chemistry, biology and microbiology.
This is a hands-on post providing guidance and support at local level on relevant safety related issues, and also being involved in pragmatically resolving them.
Source and nature of management provided
Day to day line management will be provided by your line manager, the Technical Manager of the South Science area (STM), and the Director of Faculty Technical Services (DoTS).
Staff management responsibility
None.
Special conditions
Visits to organism holding and breeding facilities. Occasional work away from the campus.
Inspection and work with various laboratory environments and other work areas undertaking biological, organism and chemical teaching and research work, on or off campus.
Main duties and responsibilities
1 / Organise and participate in Health & Safety (H&S) induction events for undergraduates, postgraduates and academic staff and others within Biology & Biochemistry, Chemistry and other Science Faculty Departments.
2 / Arrange and advertise appropriate local H&S training events.
Record outcomes and attendance at H&S training events.
3 / Produce and assist in making CoSHH and risk assessments.
4 / Produce and deliver high quality health and safety briefing materials.
5 / Planning and delivery of agreed goals.
6 / Adopt and ensure compliance with relevant University, local, national and international safety policies and procedures.
7 / Liaise with the Technical Manager, and the University Health, Safety and Environment Service (UHSE) to ensure appropriate central issues are dealt with as and when they occur. To liaise with the UHSE on health and safety matters.
8 / Ensure compliance with appropriate health and safety policies.
Arrange and participate in scheduled and unscheduled safety checks.
Record and follow up on issues arising from these checks.
9 / Advise and brief Technical Manager, Heads of Department, and Director of Technical Services on emerging local issues.
10 / Record, maintain and update records of field workers in UK and overseas.
11 / Liaison where necessary with external agencies such as the Home Office and other Universities and other relevant external safety bodies, to ensure compliance where there is a local implication not already being managed by UHS&E.
Arrange collection and collation of information for annual returns and other monitoring and regulatory activities.
12 / To assist UHS&E in participating in fire safety inspections and tests within the departments. To implement actions as identified.
13 / To ensure adequate numbers of first aiders are maintained in consultation with UHS&E.
14 / To assist the Head of Department, STM, or DoTS with accidents and dangerous occurrences reporting documentation and minor incident investigations.
15 / Assist in similar activities to the above for example; Open days, summer schools and other short courses.
16 / Undertake role of Radiation Protection Supervisor for the south science areas.
17 / Keep skills updated by participation in appropriate CPD etc.
18 / To develop and maintain excellent working relationships with managers, staff, students, contractors/sub-contractors, and other stakeholders.
19 / Assist in the preparation of department business continuity plans.
20 / Other duties commensurate with the grade as directed by your line manager.
21 / The majority of the duties described above will take place in and around research and teaching facilities spread across buildings 1, 3, &, 4S & 4SA. However some similar work will occasionally be required in other facilities across the campus as time permits.

Qualifications
A minimum first degree in a relevant subject area.

NEBOSH / NCRQ national general certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
