Lesson plan 1: Why is education important?

Lesson plan 1: Why is education important?

Name of lesson / Why is education important?
Overview / Learners will consider the importance of education and appreciate that it should not be taken for granted. The lesson will also highlight the importance of education for their future.
Learning outcomes / The overarching learning outcome covered by this lesson is:
●  LO3: Learn skills needed to transition themselves from school through various stages of their career
Lesson objectives / By the end of this lesson, learners should:
●  understand the importance of education and the ways in which it can help them to achieve in the future
●  understand that not every child is given the opportunity to learn.
Icebreaker / Ask the class the questions, ‘Is education important? Does everyone have the right to an education?’
You may like to show the class the following YouTube video to show them that not all children have access to an education: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSOfHb1B5_I&feature=player_embedded
Information / Encourage your learners to consider what education means to them personally. If you have access to an interactive whiteboard, you may wish to share the material at the following link, which shows what education means to a selection of American learners: http://pinterest.com/pbsnewshour/why-i-go-to-school/
Verification / Split learners up into groups of four or five and ask them to think about the benefits of education. You may wish to prompt them by asking the following questions.
●  How has education affected your family?
●  How has education affected your health and happiness?
●  How may education affect your future employment opportunities?
●  Does education offer opportunities for travel?
●  What impact does education have on society and the economy?
Each group should appoint one learner as a spokesperson who reports back to the rest of the class. This will allow you to assess learners’ understanding of the lesson content.
Activity / Ask learners to create an A3 display, titled ‘Why is education important?’, that summarises their group discussion.
Learners will need paper, pencils/felt-tip pens, and perhaps cut outs from newspapers and magazines for this activity.
Differentiation: stretch and support / You may wish to reassure learners that different people learn in different ways: some people are more practical, while others are better at exams. It does not matter what their strengths are, as there is a route through education for everyone.
Extra time available? / You could discuss what education means to you as a tutor, and/or how your past education helped you to the position you are in now.
Summary / Learners should be aware that they are fortunate to have been given an opportunity to learn and achieve.
Education is something that none of us should take for granted: if we do, we risk missing or wasting the opportunities we have.
