Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the fixed term part time contract position of research assistant within the discipline of General Practice at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The project includes partners from 6 northern European countries; Scotland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The successful candidate will work as part of a research team in collaboration with staff from Engineering and General Practice to implement transnational telemedicine solutions, at scale, and in a sustainable manner, into everyday practice across the Northern Periphery. The position is funded under the EU Northern Periphery Project (NPP), Implementing Transnational Telemedicine Solutions (ITTS) for a period of 23 months and is available on a half-time basis (2.5 days/19.5 hours per week).

Organisation: The Northern Periphery Programme is one of thirteen Interreg IIIB programmes aimed at encouraging and supporting transnational co-operation between the regions of Europe. It provides the opportunity for organisations from the programme area to work together on joint projects concerning common issues and problems The Western Research and Educational Network (WestREN) is a partner in this project Led by the discipline of General Practice NUI Galway, over 140 general practitioners and over 400, 000 patients along the western seaboard are now involved in WestREN.

Job Description: The duration of the post will be for 23 months starting February 1st, 2012. The Researcher will be responsible for the coordination, and implementation of a selection of ten demonstrator projects on the themes of video-consultation, mobile self-management and home-based health services will be implemented in clinical specialities including speech therapy, renal services, psychiatry, emergency services, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, rehabilitation and care of the elderly within the WestREN network. Common evaluation methods including health economics will quantify the outputs.

The main duties include:

  • Investigation of the requirements of demonstrator projects.
  • Recruitment and coordination to the WestREN network
  • Recruitment of project teams for demonstrator projects
  • Implementation of required projects including technology infrastructure and recruitment of patients and clinicians
  • Data collection, evaluation and write-up
  • Presentation and publication of projects evaluations
  • Coordination of information between all members of the project.
  • Monitoring the progress of the projects and writing reports for lead partner.
  • Participation in research meetings with Primary Investigator and international teams in various locations and by teleconference and videoconference.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all project results.

Essential Skills Required:

Nursing qualification

Excellent research administration and networking skills

Good level of IT skills, proficient in use of internet and Microsoft Word and Excel

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Good initiative and flexibility

Experience of Agresso or similar accounting software programme

Experience of teleconferencing and video-conferencing management
