Current Events News Summaries

Rotation day: ______

You will be responsible for one current events news article summary approximately every two weeks throughout the school year. You have been given an assigned day (M-F) and week (A or B). If you are absent, you will be expected to have your written summary ready to present and turn in on the day that you return to class. If you do not have your summary on your assigned day, you must present and turn it in no later than the end of the week for a late grade (maximum of C-).

Here are the guidelines:

1.  Choose a full-length article from a reputable newspaper, news magazine, or Internet.

2.  The original news article must be at least 5 complete paragraphs in length.

3.  The original news article that you choose must fit into one of the categories listed below (No “OTHERS,” including sports, entertainment, or crimes). If not, you will be required to choose a new article and write a new article summary.

4.  Read the entire article thoroughly, and be sure that you fully understand the content of your chosen article.

5.  In your own words, type or write legibly a complete and factual paragraph summary of the article that highlights the major points. The summary should answer Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? and should include other important details. Avoid using direct quotations by paraphrasing instead. Do not give your opinion—this should be a factual summary.

6.  Beneath the summary, include the bibliography information in the correct format (See back side). You will lose 2 points without the bibliography information in the correct format.

7.  Print or carefully cut out the original article, and staple it to the back of your summary. Be prepared to read your summary to the class on your assigned day. Be sure to turn in the article summary after presenting it to the class, and DON’T FORGET A HEADING!
