Review for Archdiocese of New York Grade 3 Religion Exam

1.  God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: the Trinity.

2.  The love the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have for each other in the Trinity is the model of the love we are to have for one another.

3.  We always use God’s name with reverence.

4.  God’s love embraces all people of the world. Therefore, our love and respect must exclude no one.

5.  Jesus is the Son sent by God the Father. During his life on Earth, Jesus gathered a community of followers called disciples.

6.  He taught this community of followers about the kingdom of God.

7.  He shard their joys and sorrows and healed their illnesses.

8.  God sent His Son, Jesus, to show us how to love God, others, and ourselves.

9.  When we love as Jesus taught us, we can see God’s kingdom all around us in our world.

10.  In the Lord’s Prayer we pray for God’s kingdom to come.

11.  We too are called to follow Jesus, and to be part of His Body, the Church.

12.  Jesus taught that His true followers are those who love everyone.

13.  Some of the ways we follow Jesus are by showing respect for life and the earth, and by loving other people.

14.  Respect for life includes love of ourselves by:

·  Respecting our bodies

·  Developing our gifts and talents

15.  We are to care for others by:

·  Respecting their person

·  Respecting their reputation

·  Respecting their property and possessions

16.  In justice, the resources of the earth are to be cared for and shared. This is called stewardship.

17.  We have special responsibilities to show love and reverence to our parents or guardians and to be kind to all other family members.

18.  Refusing to love God, ourselves, and neighbors is sinful.

19.  We sin when we deliberately chose not to obey the Commandments of God. We must say we are sorry, ask to be forgiven, and make up for the wrong we have done.

20.  Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent.

21.  Jesus is our Savior. He died on the cross for us and rose from the dead.

22.  At the Ascension, the Risen Jesus returned to His Father.

23.  The feast of the Ascension is celebrated forty days after Easter.

24.  On Pentecost, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to His followers to continue His work.

25.  The feast of Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter.

26.  Pentecost marks the birth of the Church.

27.  The Holy Spirit gives each person a gift and mission for the good of all.

28.  As Jesus’ disciples, we follow Him in this life to happiness forever with the Father in heaven.

29.  It is the grace of the Holy Spirit that enables us to follow Jesus.

30.  The Church, the people of God, continues Jesus’ mission on earth. The Catholic Church is a community of people who share the same faith and sacraments and are united in the Holy Spirit under the leadership of the Pope and the bishops.

31.  As members of the Church, we are to do all we can to continue Jesus’ mission of bringing the Good News of salvation to the entire world.

32.  Through the Sacraments of Christian Initiation we receive the fullness of the spirit and become members of the Church.

·  In the Sacrament of Baptism, God gives us His life. Baptism takes away original sin and our personal sins.

·  In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the life of faith grows in us and the Spirit empowers us to be witnesses to Jesus.

·  In the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, Jesus feeds us with His Body and Blood, and makes us one with Him and one another.

33.  In the Eucharist celebration, the Sacrifice of the Mass, Jesus gathers us in worship and thanksgiving, and offers Himself to the Father for us.

34.  In the Mass we are given spiritual nourishment to continue Jesus’ ministry of service through the Word of God which we hear and through the gift of Jesus whom we receive in Holy Communion. Through the Sacraments of Healing we are forgiven, strengthened, and comforted as members of the church:

·  In the Sacrament of Penance, or Reconciliation, through the absolution of the priest, Jesus forgives our sinful choices (personal sin) and renews or restores our relationship with God and the Church.

·  In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, through the anointing with oil by the priest, Jesus gives comfort, strength, and peace to the sick, the elderly, and the dying.

35.  We often fail to love God and others as we should. The Sacrament of Penance strengthens us to renew our efforts to be more loving.

36.  The priest says, “I absolve you” in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

37.  Contrition is being sorry for our sins and intending not to sin again. Contrition is a kind of prayer in which we ask for God’s forgiveness.

38.  At Mass we ask God’s forgiveness by praying “Lord, have mercy.”

39.  God sent us His Son, Jesus, to give us the gift of forgiveness.

40.  Mary has a special place in the Church as Mother of God and Mother of the Church.

41.  We turn to Mary, our Mother in heaven, who prays to Jesus for us. She is an example of how her Son wants us to live.

42.  The feast of the Assumption, August 15, celebrates that Mary was raised body and soul into heaven.

43.  Jesus chose the Apostles to serve his people in a special way. He named Peter as their leader. Peter was the first Pope.

44.  The Pope is the successor of Saint Peter and the bishops are the successors of the apostles.

45.  In Jesus’ name, the Pope and bishops continue to teach, sanctify (bless), and govern.

46.  We pray for and are guided by our Church leaders.

47.  When we pray, we show belief in God.

48.  The Church’s leadership helps us to follow Jesus. We listen and are guided by its teaching.

49.  We experience the church most immediately in our local parish.

50.  All around the world, Catholics celebrate Mass in the same way.

51.  Catholics celebrate Sunday Mass to give thanks and praise to
God.

52.  Jesus teaches us that we can use our talents to serve others. This is our vocation.

53.  In the Apostles’ Creed we say we believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

54.  The Two Great commandments are:

1.  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

2.  You shall love your neighbor as you love yourself.

55.  Parts of the Mass:

·  The Penitential Rite – we say we are sorry to God during the Mass

·  Liturgy of the Word – the Scriptures are proclaimed during this time

·  The Offertory – we bring bread and wine to the altar

·  The Consecration – the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus

·  The Dismissal Rite – we are given a blessing and sent to serve others

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son,

our Lord.

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended into hell;

on the third day He rose again

from the dead;

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand

of God the Father almighty;

from there he will come again to judge

the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen.
