Our students received Dandy Dolphins for exhibiting the Pillars of Caring and Citizenship when they donated bars of soap and new socks to support two different community service projects. Both collections will continue through the month of October.

Fire Prevention Poster Contest
Contest information was sent home on Oct. 9. If your child would like to submit a poster, please return the completed work to class by Oct. 16 so that it may be displayed in time for judging. Even though children of St. Augustine firefighters are not eligible to participate in the contest, I encourage every student to complete a poster to share their knowledge in a creative way. If your child is in need of poster board, please send a written note in the planner or by e-mail no later than Oct. 13. I will send a piece home after receiving your request.Looking Ahead: Costume Parade
This year’s parade will be on Oct. 30. I encourage students to dress as an (elementary-appropriate) book character. However, if they choose another costume, here are the KES rules: wear sneakers (no heels or boots) with costumes; come to school dressed in costume and bring school clothes in a bag to change later-it is helpful for students to wear as much of their school clothes under their costume for ease and to save time; no makeup (including fake blood) or spray color in hair; no scary costumes or masks, such as hockey or “Scream” masks; and no weapon props. Additional reminders and information will be sent home again before the parade date.
Reminder: There is no school for students on Mon., Oct. 19. Our Special on Oct. 20th will be PE: Wear sneakers and socks!

Homework-Week of Oct. 12-16, 2015
Reading-Read a just-right AR book. Reading should take place at home EACH night, at least Mon.-Thurs. during a regular school week. The signature in the planner is evidence the child has completed this assignment. Additional: Begin planning for book character.
Writing-The nightly journal entry, Mon.-Thurs., is to be completed. Expectations: dated entries, legible writing, correct spellings of common words, capital (upper-case) letters at the beginning of sentences and with proper nouns, correct punctuation, and complete ideas.
Spelling-Students study these words: quiet, quit, quite, quart, equal, question, queen, square, squeak, squeeze. /
This Week’s Celebrations
Hobbs has met, and gone beyond, the AR goal for the year. He reached over 50 points on Oct. 6.
The class earned their second Perfect Pods recognition. The 20th pod was received on Oct. 6 from Mr. Lewis. The students were awarded extra recess and Granny Smith apples.AT-HOME LANGUAGE ARTS PROJECT The students will participate in the Second-Grade Character Book Project. Look for this information in your child’s blue folder. The students will each read a (new to them) AR book and respond by writing their own character summary in class. The second portion of the project asks the students to design and create a model of their character at home. ANYTHING that can be shaped, glued, colored, and finished to resemble the character may be used. Keep in mind a reasonable and manageable size if transported by bus. If choosing a pumpkin for the character’s base, DO NOT cut or carve any portion. Decorate or paint it, but keep it intact! Our class is getting an early start, and while I originally stated our first at-home required project would have details sent on Oct. 20, I am providing you with the information NOW. This will allow ample time to display the work during the final week of the month. All character models are to be brought to school by Oct. 26, and taken home on Oct. 30. /

Words of Wisdom
Each morning, the students listen to the Words of Wisdom on the televised announcements. They are now responding to the day’s quotations in a classroom journal. Their reflections require them to think deeply and express themselves and their understanding in written form.
Here is a recent Words of Wisdom quotation: “When you follow safety rules, you not only keep yourself safer, but you keep those around you safer.”
This is what Emilia wrote in response: “Okay, so imagine you were at school in the hallway. If you run, other people will, and you will all get hurt. But if you didn’t run, you wouldn’t get hurt. So set a good example for other people around you so they can set one, too.”
