An ASUCD Senate Bill to allocate $750.00 for the Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlán 2012 Fall Statewide Conference which will bring approximately 300 students.

BACKGROUND: Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlán (M.E.Ch.A) is a student organization that promotes higher education, cultura, and historia. M.E.Ch.A began in April of 1969, when over 100 Chican@s came together at UC Santa Barbara to formulate a plan for higher education: El Plan de Santa Barbara. Moreover, M.E.Ch.A de UC Davis hosted the first California Statewide conference in 1971, called “Regeneración.”

With this developed two very important contributions to the Chicano Movement: M.E.Ch.A and Chicano Studies. As Chicana/Chicano students of the University of California, Davis, M.E.Ch.A takes the responsibility of promoting the advancement of nuestra gente through the development of critical consciousness. Through their outreach efforts, M.E.Ch.A promotes not only higher education, but also the liberation of our minds.

Continuing in this tradition, M.E.Ch.A de UC Davis will be hosting the 2012 Fall Statewide. The 2012 Fall Statewide conference will be held at UC Davis on October 19-21, 2012. This year’s theme is “Movimiento: On the Borderlands, Under a New Sun.” The mission of the conference is to provide a welcoming space to cultivate new consciousness as we transition into the new sun.

M.E.Ch.A, through outreach and the 2012 Fall Statewide Conference, encourages Chicanismo within the community, politicizes Raza, and continues the struggle for self-determination of the Chican@ people.

M.E.Ch.A de UC Davis has been fundraising off and on campus to provide housing, ensure affordable registration, as well as purchase food, entertainment, and facilities. M.E.Ch.A has recruited undergraduate students to plan and work the conference, reached out to communities for workshop and caucus spaces, as well as invited a variety of higher education students and scholars. M.E.Ch.A hopes to facilitate solidarity between campuses and communities, particularly at Davis where Chican@ students have been historically marginalized and underrepresented.
