ADOBE AUDITION

Production Tips

Saving multitrack files:

First make a folder for all your wave files. Choose FILE > SAVE SESSION. Select the folder to save your files in, enter the file name, and be sure to click the Save All Associated Files box in the lower left corner of the dialog box. This creates a session file that keeps track of where all the tracks are. If you don’t click this box, some tracks may be missing when you open your project again.

Moving between track views:

To move a waveform from Multitrack View to Edit View, simply double click on the track. Click the Multitrack View tab to toggle back after you edit the track.

If you recorded your track in Edit View and you want to move it into Multitrack View, select EDIT > INSERT IN MULTITRACK or simply go to Multitrack View and drag the file from the File window to the desired track. (If you don’t see the File Window at the left side of your screen, click on WINDOW > FILES to open it.)

Splitting tracks:

It’s often handy to record a voiceover in one continuous take, then break it up and move the pieces where you want them (so you can have narration, then music, then narration). To do this, in multitrack view, click on the spot where you want to divide the waveform. Choose CLIP > SPLIT. This will split the track into two clips. Select a clip by left-clicking on it, and then right-click and drag it to where you want it to be.

Mix Down:

To make a “submix” that will speed up processing time and reduce hard disk space used, choose FILE > BOUNCE TO NEW TRACK. Mute the original tracks. Caution: Once tracks are mixed down, they can’t be separated and you won’t be able to make changes in your project.

Time Stretch:

This is great if your commercial is just a few seconds too long or too short. It allows you to speed up or slow down the selection, so you can make it the exact length you want, without changing the pitch. Your audio must be in multitrack view. Click View > Enable Clip Stretching. Drag the handle on the bottom right corner of the track to lengthen or shorten your project.

Ripping audio from CD:

In edit view, click FILE > Extract Audio from CD. Select the track you want from the pop-up window and click OK.

Normalizing:

This will boost your audio to the correct levels if you recorded too low. It also allows you to adjust the levels of several different inserts into a program so they are the same level. Your audio must be in edit view. Click EFFECTS > AMPLITUDE > NORMALIZE. Normalize to 90%.

Punch In:

You can record over just the part that contains a mistake, and leave the rest of the track undisturbed. Highlight the area with a mistake. Right click or click on Edit menu and choose Punch In. Click on the red R button. Hit record and fix your

mistake. You can rerecord as many times as you want. Do this in multitrack and make sure other tracks are muted.

Downloading sound effects:

A barking dog, a car horn, a siren, applause, and many other sounds can be inserted into your production.

1.Go to Click on the interlocked boxes in the upper right corner of the screen to tile the windows.

2.Click the Preview button to play a sound effect. iTunes will open and play it.

3.When you have found a sound effect you want, open Audition, tile the windows, and move Audition to the right so you can see iTunes on the left.

4.Arm a track in Audition and click record.

5.Click the play button on iTunesto play the sound effect.

Note: There are many websites that offer free sound effects. Please feel free to use whatever one you want!
