16. / Module Synopsis:
This module provides participants with an introduction to the teaching and learning of Business Studies in secondary schools and sets foundations for reflective practice. It covers the nature and scope of business education in Hong Kong schools, a critical review of secondary school business curriculum, and a focused inquiry into the school-based instructional design and teaching skills required for effective instruction in business fundamentals at junior secondary level.
17. / Aim:
To develop participants’ knowledge of, and competencies for, teaching business subjects specially for business fundamentals in junior secondary classes, with a particular emphasis on understanding the Hong Kong business curriculum guide and school-based instructional design.
18. / Module Objectives:
To enable participants to
a. / analyse issues and contexts that provide a foundation from which they are able to develop a sense of the role and importance of business education in secondary schools;
d. / analyse the Hong Kong business curriculum guide, in terms of requirements and approaches for teaching business fundamentals at junior secondary level;
c. / demonstrate an ability to design school-based scheme of work, apply instructional and assessment strategies and use authentic resources for effective teaching and learning of business fundamentals;
d. / develop an understanding of how to manage and cater for diversity in business classes through constant reflection.
19. / Module Content:
a. / Business education in Hong Kong secondary schools;
b. / Overview of secondary school business curriculum with a special focus on the teaching syllabus of business fundamentals
c. / School-based instructional design for business fundamentals;
d. / Learning and teaching strategies for business fundamentals;
e. / Use of assessment strategies and authentic resources in business fundamentals;
f. / Managing the business lesson for effective learning: motivating students and catering for individual needs.

20. / Teaching and Learning Activities:
The module will be delivered through lectures and workshops, in addition to micro-teaching sessions that provide opportunities for participants to teach extended components of a lesson and to critically evaluate their own and their peers’ instructional strategies. Participants will be required to identify the encountered problems and suggest possible strategies for achieving an on-going refinement of their teaching competency.

a.  Teaching package on a selected business fundamentals topic using appropriate instructional design, teaching strategies, assessment strategies and teaching aids. / 30 / %
b.  Peer review report on the teaching package in assignment a. / 20 / %
c.  Preparation of a portfolio of learning tasks completed throughout the module, which may include the following items: up-to-dated teaching material, instructional planning, micro-teaching record and its evaluation, assessment items, field work, project plan and etc. This portfolio is expected to be continually revised and updated throughout the module. / 50 / %
