Ancient Egypt Cooperative Group Project
Interactive Picture Book
Pre-AP Social Studies
Description: Students will prepare an interactive picture book to effectively teach the historical significance of a particular aspect of Ancient Egyptian culture.
Standards addressed: AP 1.3, 2.1, 2.2; SSWH1, SSWG 1,2
Enduring understanding: The student will understand that the beliefs and ideals of a society are reflected in its culture.
Learning Questions: What were the significant culture markers for Ancient Egypt? How did the particular culture marker represent and reflect the culture of Ancient Egypt? How did certain individuals affect culture change? How were gender roles reflected through culture?
Objectives: to learn and practice research skills, to become “experts” on the topic assigned, to demonstrate content knowledge by effectively teaching to class mates, to learn and practice collaboration skills, to gain an overall knowledge of the unique culture of Ancient Egypt.
Learning Products:compileresearch notes, create an interactive picture book, assemble bibliography page, teach through presentation
Process: In cooperative learning groups, students will research the assigned topic, prepare an interactive picture book, and orally present their project to the rest of the class.
Procedure:
Join with four - five class mates as directed by your teacher.
Fill out the task sheet assigning responsibilities fairly among group members. Include in the task sheet specific dates for completing assigned responsibilities. The task sheet is VERY important. It must be detailed and specific. Your teacher must be able to easily assess the planning and fulfillment of each part of the project.
Conduct research using both print and on-line resources. Take notes on note cards! Do not print out pages and merely highlight material you decide to use. Remember to record all pertinent information needed for the bibliography page. Please use the web sites we have provided.
Each group member will create four pages, one of the four pages must be interactive.
One person from your group must read the book to the rest of the class. Another person must conduct a formative assessment over the content of your book.
What will be assessed?
- On task behavior during Media Center Days
- Organization of required parts of the project contained in a folder (task sheet, group management plan, bibliography page)
- Research notes on note cards (labeled and put into folder)
- Picture book, printed and bound/color
- Interactive quality of the book
- Depthand quality of information presented
In the event a group member does not complete their agreed upon segment of the project, the entire group will not be penalized. This will be explained further by your teacher. (This is also why your project task sheet needs to be very detailed and is so important).
Tentative schedule:
Times may be adjusted according to teacher discretion
Friday & Monday, Sept. 14 & 17: research in the Media Center/lab
Tuesday – Thursday, Sept. 17-20: work on your own putting together your part of the project
