Stated Need

To ensure that courses needed by students are available, particularly courses like anthropology that attract more minorities and women than campus-side averages, we are requesting a new tenure track position in anthropology.

  • BC is experiencing growth; and is streamlining the college process by increasing the number of prepared students and reducing the time it takes to complete coursework at BC.
  • The anthropology program has one full-time tenure track faculty, who teaches 37% of the anthropology courses, one of the lowest rates on campus.
  • 12 sections were taught by adjuncts last year, and 3 sections were cancelled due to lack of faculty. This represents more than a full-time instructor load in anthropology for one academic year (10 sections).
  • In fall 2016 and in the previous academic year, anthropology classes have been cancelled because of no available faculty; and anthropology courses had waitlisted students on census date. Anth B1 was one of the top five courses with 100% capacity and full waitlists.
  • This amounts to approximately 250 students who were turned away from an anthropology course and a loss of FTES; and will cause students to delay graduating or transferring.
  • We will soon be offering distance learning anthropology courses, and a tenure track position will ensure the anthropology program can expand to meet the demands of the college.
  • The number of anthropology majors has steadily increased over the last 5 years, however, we are concerned about losing majors due to the difficulty in getting anthropology courses. Ensuring course access will ensure we do not begin to lose majors.
  • Adjunct recruiting is problematic for this field, our adjuncts have been primarily graduate students or recently graduated graduate students, but many are leaving for full-time jobs or are hired by other colleges in our district.
  • The anthropology program needs additional faculty to meet the demands of the growing college and to be able to ensure student access to needed coursesfor both majors and non-majors; thereby allowing students to complete their educational goals in a reasonable amount to time.

Student Success

Adjunct availability is limited and unpredictable, and many are not available for all time slots. The only way to ensure the demand for anthropology courses is met is by hiring a tenure track position. Further, the level of student engagement is far greater with full-time faculty, which leads to increased student success.

The benefits of additional full-time tenure track faculty over adjuncts

Tenure track faculty members:

  • regularly interact with students during office hours, unlike adjuncts with limited availability
  • mentor students on transferring, future employment and academic planning
  • are able to mentor students over multiple semesters, and increase engagement by having the same students in multiple classes, building relationships that foster student success
  • are able to be fully invested in the campus community and participate in department meetings and college committees, unlike adjuncts who cannot fully invest in the college and its community
  • are able to regularly engage colleagues and work collectively on program planning
  • are more attuned to the ‘big picture’ of the college and department, and provide valuable input on program planning, and participate in implementing new procedures
  • have a greater level of engagement with students which increases student success and completion
  • work on curriculum and assessment to a deeper extent than adjunct are able, proving valuable input for the program

Multiple tenure track faculty in a program increases collegiate interactions with program planning and assessment, which results in a stronger program that is able to increase student engagement and success.

Assessment

A Tenure track faculty member will add strength to the program’s efforts to increase scores on SLOs and PLOs by having more faculty involved. Assessment is more strongly focused if multiple faculty work in developing methods and analyzing results. Currently one fulltime faculty member conducts assessment, with minimal assistance by adjuncts.

This request meets the Transfer requirements from the Budget Decision Criteria

2. The Courses taught by this instructor:

  • Courses taught by this instructor will:
  • Contribute to the AA-T in Anthropology degree and/or preparation for transfer
  • Contribute to student martriculation through meeting General Education requirements
  • Contribute to student attainment of critical thinking skills

This request meets the Student Success criteria of the Budget Decision Criteria

INTERNAL REVIEW OF POSITION

  1. Explain why the work cannot be reassigned to other staff within the department

We cannot schedule enough sections to meet the demand for anthropology courses without a fulltime instructor. We have been unable to replace adjunct who have left; the nature of the field makes adjunct recruitment difficult. Our primary source for adjuncts has been grad students or recent grads from CSUB, who often leave for fulltime jobs. The other colleges in our district are in a similar position, and have been taking our adjunct by scheduling earlier.

  1. Impact on College/District if position is not filled

Offering to students will be reduced, and the sections that are offered will not adequately cover the full range of time slots. The college is growing, but without a fulltime position the anthropology program will not be able to grow along with BC. Fewer course offerings will also result in a decrease in majors, as it would present difficulties for students to complete required classes in two years.

  1. Is a temporary employee currently performing the work of this position?

 YesX No

  1. New position: How is the work assigned to this position presently accomplished?

The work is assigned to this position is currently accomplished by multiple adjunct instructors.
