SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH WORKSHOP

November 13, 2008

The School Board of Brevard County, Florida met in special session on Thursday, November13, 2008, at 9:30 a.m., at the Educational Services Facility, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida.Notice of the meeting was advertised in Florida Todaynewspaper on Thursday,November 6, 2008, and the affidavit of publication with a copy of the ad attached is filed in the Affidavit File in the Board Office.

OPENING EXERCISES

Vice Chairman Amy Kneessy called the workshop to order at 9:30a.m.

Members Present: Robert Jordan,Barbara Murray, Amy Kneessy, Board Members elect – Karen Henderson, Andy Ziegler

Ms. Kneessy took this opportunity to welcome the two new Board Members and turned the workshop over to Harold Bistline, School Board Attorney.

Mr. Bistline explained that the proposals are from the top five search firms in the country and the Board does not have to follow any bidding RFP process. The search firms are as follows:

Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, Ltd.

PROACT Search

Ray and Associates, Inc.

School Exec Connect

McPherson & Jacobson, LLC

BWP & Associates, LLC

Lengthy discussion ensued between the Board Members about the above mentioned search firms in regard to the cost and size of districts the firms have serviced in the past. The Board also discussed the use of Florida School Board Association (FSBA).

The Board questioned Dr. DiPatri about his opinion in regard to FSBA and the process that he went through when he was hired.

The Board requested to have Mr. Bistline contact Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, Ltd.,PROACT Search and Ray and Associates, Inc. search firms to attend a workshop on December 8, 2008 beginning at 4:00 p.m.to 7:00 p.m. A consent agenda itemwill be placed on the December 9, 2008 for the potential selection of a search firm and to schedule a tentative special meeting on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. DiPatri suggested to the Board that they send Mr. Bistline a list of questions to ask the firms sp there is consistency in the process. He also mentioned other things to considerincluding how they will involve BASA, Local 1010, and BFT in the process.

Ms. Kneessy questioned Dr. DiPatri whether there would be an agenda item at the November 18, 2008 School Board meeting in regard to makeup days. Dr. DiPatri stated that he was assured by Linda Champion, Deputy Commissioner of Education, that the district would get an answer in regard to the makeup days for Tropical Storm Fay by Monday, November 17, 2008. Dr. DiPatri stated that there would be an agenda item on the November 18, 2008 School Board Meeting.

Discussion ensued amongst the Board in regard to the makeup days, calendar schedule and the exam schedule. Dr. DiPatri stated that the district withheld the calendar standards until January because of this impending decision.

There being no further discussion, the workshop adjourned at 10:40a.m.
