Join us for the 2016 OAWA Coaches’ Weekend!

The weekend will include the following workshops:

These courses should be of interest to coaches wishing to become Competition/Introduction Certified in time to Coach at the Canadian Cadet/Juvenile Championships April 7 – 9, 2017 in Windsor, Ontario.

Comp/Dev.Workshop: Full Weekend NCCP TrainingPresenter: Mr. Robert Parsons $150.00*1

Saturday/Sunday:

-NCCP Competition/Development Wrestling Module.

This course should be of interest to coaches working towards becoming Competition/Development Certified, making them eligible to coach at the Canadian Junior Championships and other high performance events (Canada Games, select Wrestling Canada National Teams, etc.).

Designed for Coaches looking to upgrade/refresh their skills outside the NCCP. This year’s clinic is intended for coaches looking to get a head start on the wrestling season, refresh some of their skills and pick up new ones, and who may need to attend a wrestling workshop to maintain their wrestling training to abide by the new OPHEA Guidelines:

Wrestling

At least one wrestling coach must possess one of the following coaching qualifications:

1...•NCCP Competition Coach – Competition-Introduction Part 1 Course

2...•NCCP Competition Coach – Competition-Introduction Part 2 Course

3...•Accreditation as a NCCP Wrestling Learning Facilitator

4...•Completion of wrestling NCCP level 1 and/or level 2 certification in the past

5...•Attendance at a clinic or workshop within the last three years provided by an instructor who is knowledgeable of the activity (e.g., appropriate skills and progressions), and where safety is addressed as outlined in the Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines.

6...•Effective September 1, 2016, past experience within the last 3 years as a coach in wrestling, having knowledge of the activity (e.g., appropriate skills and progressions) andcurrent safety practices as outlined in the Ontario PhysicalEducation Safety Guidelines.

Coaches taking this workshop will:

Morning session:9:00 – 12:00 pm

-Be introduced to and trained as instructors for the OAWA’s new PLAY Wrestling (Physical Literacy and Youth Wrestling) Resource package*

-Receive refresher training on Safety: Your Emergency Action Plan (EAP)

-Concussion Protocol Training/Refresher

Lunch Break:12:00 – 1:00 pm(lunch included in cost)

Afternoon Session:1:00 – 3:30 pm

Participate in the teaching session of the OHP Athletes’ Combine

Final Session:4:00 – 5:30 pm(optional)

Light Scrimmage Session for athletes.

* Physical Literacy and Youth (PLAY) Wrestling

This is a new resource program for clubs, schools, and coaches to:

  • assist in the training of elementary school teachers with limited to no wrestling background who will be teaching wrestling in a curricular setting (Module 1)
  • and/or running programs through their school/club for the introduction of Physical Literacy for Wrestling and basic wrestling schools for youth wrestling programs (Module 2).

Coaches taking this workshop will be able to offer this course to others in their area wishing to teach wrestling in school gym classes and other similar entry level applications.

OHP Wrestling Combine

What is it?

A combined scouting and recruiting opportunity for High Performance athletes hoping to be on the Talent Development list for the 2017 Canada Summer Games and be recruited to a top Ontario University Wrestling program.

Who is it open to?

To be eligible to participate, the athlete must:

-Be with a coach who is attending the Coaches’ Weekend events.

-Have place in the top three at the 2016 Ontario Cadet/Juvenile or Junior Championships or the top three at the 2016 Canadian Cadet/Juvenile or Junior Championships or top three at the 2016 OFSAA Championships.

-Be a member in good standing of the OAWA.

Participation in the combine will be capped at 40 athletes – first come, first served.

Cost:$20.00 per athlete (includes lunch). No accommodations provided.

Schedule/Outline

Morning session:9:00 – 12:00 pm

The 2017 Canada Summer Games Team Ontario Coaching Staff will run the recruits through a series of activities:

  • Basic warm up
  • Technical Drills
  • Situational Drills

During these activities, Coaches from the various Ontario University Varsity Wrestling teams will be in attendance watching how the wrestlers perform in the drills. Each Coach will have a list of the athletes (who will be assigned a number) and a ‘Scouting Sheet’ with the athlete’s basic information:

-Name

-Grade

-Approximate weight

-Post-Secondary School plans

-Personal Club/School Coach’s contact information.

Each athlete will also receive an information package including school information on the various Ontario University Wrestling teams participating.

Lunch Break:12:00 – 1:00 pm

Afternoon Session:1:00 – 3:30 pm

The Afternoon session of the combine will feature instruction from selected Ontario University Coaches:

-Skills needed to be a high performance wrestler

Final Session:4:00 – 5:30 pm(optional)

Light Scrimmage Session for athletes. This session is optional and is intended for those athletes whose coach is participating in the extended (NCCP) Coaching Workshops, but all are welcome to participate.
