The Jackie Frost Ensemble
“Cold Lonely Blues Tour”
The Jackie Frost Ensemble is very excited to announce the release their second project on Courthouse Records – Cold Lonely Blues (CH 0506 – official release date August 15th, 2006) The new CD follows the March 2005 release of the well received Calliopewhich garnered two nominations at the 2006 Independent Music Awards.
Cold Lonely Blues continues down the path the band began with Calliope. It provides a host of original tunes by band members Danny Hughes and Malcolm Pulley as well as one original, O’ Virginia, from Richmonderfriend, poet, author, retired surgeon, entrepreneur and band supporter H. Fairfax Conquest. O’ Virginia comes to the band at a great point in time as the JFE has recently been awarded a touring grant by the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
The CD covers a decade of musical styles and reveals some of the bands musical influences; like Fats Waller, Louis Jordan, Eva Cassidy, Bonnie Rait, Norah Jones, Emmy Lou Harris, and Tim O’Brien. Keeping to the acoustic instruments, the band weaves these styles seamlessly together to form the unique Jackie Frost Ensemble sound and style – hard to describe, hard to pigeon hole, but easy to enjoy.
Led by Jackie’s smooth sultry vocals, the Ensemble has their work cut out for them. Danny Hughes artfully empowers the guitar and sings the baritone vocal part. Malcolm pulley tastefully juggles the mandolin, banjo, dobro, and resonator guitar, and sings the tenor part. The ensemble is held together on most cuts by band member Rusty Farmer on the upright bass. On three of the more bluegrassy cuts, the JFE is joined by friends – the Big Boss Combo – Richmond’s premier Bluegrass Band. Bill Lux handles the upright bass and bass vocals on several tunes, and is joined by Jim Skelding (fiddle) and Chris Fuller (mandolin) on O’ Virginia. The JFE often shares the stage with the Big Boss Combo to handle some of the bluegrass flavored gigs and thought it appropriate to do it on the new CD as well!
The ensemble takes a slight twist by adding the piano of Daniel Clarke on three tunes. Daniel has been a long time friend and has joined the band in many area concerts. Daniel currently plays keys for Richmond’s killer funky fusion jazz band - Modern Groove Syndicate (also on Courthouse records).
Rounding out the magic is Lance Koehler on percussion and one perfectly timed and recorded primal scream at the very end of the CD (you just have to hear it). Lance also acted as Engineer as we recorded the project at his Richmond studio – Minimum Wage Recording. CLB was mastered by Bill McElroy of Slipped Disc in Ashland, Virginia.
Oh yeah – back to the Cold Lonely Blues Tour!
We will kick off the tour with a CD release party at the Ashland Coffee and Tea on August 18th.
