MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS ‘KNIT-CRO-SHEEN,” Art. A.64; 2 balls each of No. 18-A Shaded Purples and 1 ball each of No. 1 White and 49-A Killarney
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

Starting at center with White, ch 52.

1st rnd: In 4th ch from hook, make 4 dc, ch 2, 5 dc, ch 2 and 5 dc; ch 1, *skip next 6 ch, make dc; ch 2 and dc in next ch (shell made); ch 1, skip next 5 ch, 5 dc in next ch. Repeat from * across, making (5 dc, ch2) twice and 5 dc in last ch; ch 1, now working across opposite side of starting chain, make shells and 5 dc groups to correspond, ending with ch 1. Join to top of ch-3.

2nd rnd: Sl st to center dc of next group, ch 5, dc in same dc, ch 1, in next sp make 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc (corner shell made); ch 1, skip next 2 dc, in next dc make dc, ch 2 and dc (dc shell); ch 1, make a corner shell in next sp, ch 1, skip next 2 dc, make dc shell in next dc, * ch 1, make dc shell in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * across long side, work around short end to correspond with previous end and complete rnd in pattern. Join to 3rd ch of ch-5.

3rd rnd: Sl st across next shell, sl st in ch-1 sp, ch 5, dc in same sp, ch 1, make a corner shell in sp of corner shell, (ch1, make dc shell in next ch-1 sp) twice; ch 1, make corner shell in sp of corner shell, * ch 1, make a dc shell in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * across long side, working short end as previous end was worked. Complete rnd in pattern. Join.

Continue to work as for 3rd rnd, making a shell in each ch-1 sp and a corner shell over each corner shell and having 1 more shell on each section between corners on each rnd until 19 rnds in all have been completed-30shells on long side and 18 shells on short side on last rod. Break off at end of 19th rnd.

20th rnd: Attach Killarney to first dc of corner shell on one long side, sc in same dc, sc in next 2 dc, 5 sc in corner sp, sc in next 3 dc, * sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 4, skip next 2 shells, in next ch-1 sp, make (tr, ch 2) 3 times; skip next shell, in ch-1 sp make (tr, ch 2) 4 times; skip next shell, in next ch-1 sp make (tr, ch 2) twice and tr (9 ch-2 sps); ch 4, skip next 2 shells, (sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc, 2 sc in shell sp, sc in next dc) 6 times. Repeat from * once more, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 4, make 9 sps as before, ch 4, skip next 2 shells, sc in next ch-1 sp and work corner as previous corner was worked. Continue in pattern around making group of sps on each end of short side with an sc section between. Join and break off.

GRAPES:

1st row: Attach Shaded Purples to first sp of any 9 sp group, ch 3, in same sp make 9 dc, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of first st of this group, draw dropped loop through (pc st made). * ch 2, make 10 dc in next sp, insert hook in first dc of group and complete pc st. Repeat from * across remaining sps. Ch 3, turn.

2nd row: 9 dc in first ch-2 sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of ch-3 from back to front, draw dropped loop through (inverted pc st made), * ch 2, 10 dc in next sp, complete inverted pc st. Repeat from * across remaining sps (8 pc sts). Ch 3 turn.

Continue working rows of pc sts, having 1 less pc st on each row until 1 pc st remains. Break off. Make a bunch of grapes the same way over each group of sps.

LEAF:

(Make 10) – Large Section (Make 3) Starting at center with Killarney, ch 15.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across to within last 2 ch. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter pick up back loop of each sc.

2nd row: Sc in each sc to center sc of 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc, sc in each remaining sc to within last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.

3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Repeat 2nd row.

6th row: Sc in each sc to center sc of 3-sc group, sl st in center sc. Break off.

SMALL SECTION (Make 2)

Starting at center with Killarney, ch 10. Work exactly as for Large Section.

Sew the 3 large sections together, joining 5 sc on each side of center sc. Sew a small section on each side to lower edges of large section, joining all sc’s on small section.

Join corner leaves as follows: Attach Killarney to center of leaf, ch 11, sl st in first sc of corner group on doily, sc in each sc to center sc of corner 8, sl st in same place as thread was attached on leaf, ch 8, sl st in last sc made on doily, sc in each remaining sc on corner, ch 11, sl st in center of leaf, Break off. Sew leaves in place between grapes and to doily.
