Natalie Coughlin’s Olympic Medals

The USA won a bronze medal in the women’s 4 x 100 free relay on Saturday nite, giving Natalie Coughlin her 12th Olympic medal, since she swam in the heats of the event. This moves her up as follows on various Olympic lists:

·  12 Olympic medals: =2nd all-time for most Olympic swimming medals, with Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson, trailing only Michael Phelps and =1st all-time for most Olympic swimming medals for women, with Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson. All sports, she moves to =7th all-time for most Olympic medals, with 12. All sports among women, she moves to =2nd all-time with Dara Torres, Jenny Thompson and German canoeist Birgit Schmidt-Fischer, trailing only Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina with 18

·  This did not improve in 2012, but Coughlin won 6 medals in 2004, and 5 in 2008, making her one of only two women to win 5 or more medals at two separate Olympic Games – the other being Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who holds the Olympic records of 18 medals which Michael Phelps is chasing

·  5 Olympic bronze medals: =2nd all-time for most Olympic swimming bronze medals, trailing only Franziska Van Almsick, and also =2nd all-time among women; to =6th all-time for most Olympic bronze medals, all sports; and to to =2nd all-time among Olympic women, all sports, trailing only Merlene Ottey (JAM-ATH) and Van Almsick

His time of 4:05.14 is the second fastest ever at the Olympics, trailing Michael Phelps’ winning time in Beijing (4:03.84), still the world record.

His 5 individual medals ranks him =5th at the Olympics in swimming among men, and 8th all-time among both genders

His 3 individual gold medals ranks him =8th at the Olympics in swimming among men, and =13th all-time among both genders

He becomes the 9th swimmer to win two medals in the men’s 400 IM

His victory made him the oldest gold medalist and medalist in the men’s 400 IM, at 27 years, 359 days.
