Interdisciplinary Clinical Staff as a Resource
The Counseling Center staff is comprised of as many as 19 clinically trained professionals, including 11 psychologists / postdoc fellows and several other disciplines including Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT), Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC), a Registered Dietician. And 5 part-time licensed independent providers. Staff profiles can be viewed at the general Counseling Center webpage.
Our staff have been trained in specializations that include Drug and Alcohol treatment, other Addictive Behaviors treatment, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Interpersonal Violence and Trauma treatment, Eating Disorder treatment, and Crisis intervention.
We are highly invested in our role as a training facility. In addition to our internship, we have had a strong psychology doctoral practicum program for several decades and currently take 4 students a year. We also have 1-2 Social Work interns and a Higher Education Student Affairs apprentice every year. We will be expanding our internship in 2018-2019 to accept 4 interns.
Support Staff as Resources
At the Baylor University Counseling Center, support staff consist of 1 office manager, 1 Administrative Associate and 4Mental Health Clerks. The Office Manager and Administrative Associate support the clinical staff with the Electronic Medical Record system (Point-n-Click), obtaining office supplies, submitting work orders, and other general supportive tasks. The Mental Health Clerkswelcome students at the front desk and maintain the schedule for all clinicians, along with assisting in other clerical duties for outreach and client care. As clinical staff, interns have the support of these positions similar to all other staff. Staff profiles can be viewed at the general Counseling Center webpage.
Training Activities & Travel/Conference Funding:
Funding for training equipment, supplies and resources, video cameras, books and videos, is supported and built into the internship budget. Computers, office equipment and other office supplies are regular and expected expenses provided by the operating budget.
Interns are fully funded to travel to the Texas Counseling Center Intern Conference each year with the Training Director. At times, other conference attendance and travel may be available, depending on budgetary expenses. Frequently, this includes the Texas University and College Counseling Center Conference (TUCCCC) every February, where interns will be encouraged to submit a proposal for a professional presentation. Some years, attendance at the Texas A&M Multicultural Conference will also be supported.
Materials and Equipment Resources:
Interns are provided with a private office space. Each intern office is equipped with a telephone with confidential voice-mail, a computer, and a webcam to record therapy sessions and supervision to practicum students. Point-in-Click is the EMR used in each intern’s office. Interns have access to counseling center books, manuals, and videotapes on a variety of topics, as well as access to the Baylor University student library, with privileges of faculty and staff for checking out and/or ordering from Inter-Library Loan, most resources needed. Professional staff are all very willing to share any resources they may have to assist interns with their training. Interns also have access to a projector and audiovisual aids for presentations, as well as black and white and color printers, when needed.
Physical Facilities and Training Setting as a Resource:
Due to recent expansion, the Baylor Counseling Center is housed in 2 locations on campus.
Our original site is called “Baylor Counseling Center – SLC”. It is located on the 2nd floor of the McLane Student Life Center (SLC), adjacent to the Health Center and the Wellness Office. This central location on campus, being surrounded by recreational equipment and activities, and being next to the Health Center, has been a positive experience for us, and how students may think about mental health. The close proximity with the Student Health Center facilitates the referral process between medical staff, psychiatry, and counselors. This part of the Counseling Center completed renovations in January 2016, resulting in a more efficient use of space, more offices, and a more efficient waiting area. We have a conference room, where staff meetings and committee meetings can be held, that also serves as a group therapy room. We share a small kitchenette with the nearby Student Health Center. All areas are accessible to students/staff with disabilities.
Our additional location is called “Baylor Counseling Center – Dutton”. It is located on the corner of Dutton Street and University Parks, adjacent to both student housing and the Truett Seminary, and across the street from the Law School. This space was specifically renovated for our counseling center needs and was completed in January 2017. It is the larger of the 2 facilities and houses a large waiting area, a large conference/meeting room, 2 other meeting rooms for group therapy and providing intern and practicum trainings, a room for our Mind/Body Lab, a large break room, and many clinician offices to accommodate our expansion of staff.
All of the interns will have offices at the Counseling Center – Dutton location, near the Training Director’s office.
