Entrance Antiphon

O people of Zion, behold, the Lord will come to save the nations, and the Lord will make the glory of his voice heard in the joy of your heart.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 72

In his day shall justice flourish,
and great peace forever.
O God, give your judgement to the king,
to a king’s son your justice,
that he may judge your people in justice,
and your poor in right judgement.
In his days shall justice flourish,
and great peace till the moon is no more.
He shall rule from sea to sea,
from the River to the bounds of the earth.
For he shall save the needy when they cry,
the poor, and those who are hopeless.
He will have pity on the weak and the needy,
and save the lives of the needy.
May his name endure forever,
his name continue like the sun.
Every tribe shall be blest in him,
All nations shall call him blessed.
In his day shall justice flourish,
and great peace forever. /

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, Alleluia.

Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight; all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Alleluia.

Communion Antiphon

Jerusalem, arise and stand upon the heights, and behold the joy which comes to you from God.

Second Sunday of Advent Year A
4th December 2016 Joe Cullen, O.P.
Commentary
First Reading (Is 11:1-10) The ideal king of the future is described here. Later Judaism and Christianity would describe him as ‘Messiah’ but the Old Testament holds no use of the term in this sense. The author looks forward to the rule of a king from the pure sources of the dynasty. As in Micah (5:1-4) he desires an ideal Davidic ruler – one from Bethlehem Ephratha rather than Jerusalem, court of the kings of his day. To this charismatic leader, endowed with God’s Spirit, are attributed a number of gifts, all of which enhance his ability to rule with justice and with particular regard for the poor. Wisdom, understanding and counsel will free him from the sort of counsellors who in the past misdirected the king. Might well enable him to put his wise strategies and plans into action. Other people called ‘wise’ in the past had claimed these qualities but Isaiah holds that they will lose such gifts at the judgement of Yahweh. Knowledge may be understood as ‘true religion’, knowledge of God, while fear of the Lord, as the wisdom literature asserts, is the beginning of wisdom and the root of all the gifts. This twice mentioned gift, fear of the Lord, was in one instance translated as reverence, and so the familiar seven gifts of the Holy Spirit fall into place.
The depiction of an idyllic age when violence of every kind has been abandoned relies on imagery similar to Hosea 2:18 where the harmony of such a time can be clearly recognised in the lack of hostilities in the world of nature. Even the most vulnerable infant need no longer fear the threat of injury and death from the wild beasts and reptiles.
Gospel (Mt 3:1-12) It is helpful to identify three themes in this passage: the appearance of John the Baptist; a call to repentance; and the promise of one to come. We notice that it is not baptism that is emphasised but repentance. Identifiable as a prophet even from his clothing, John heralds the call to the people to turn from the failures of the past to the God of the present. A reassessment of what truly matters and inner renewal is to be followed by a decision to live accordingly.
The Baptist’s harsh attack on the Pharisees uses the very words which Jesus himself would use of them – ‘brood of vipers’ (23:33). God cannot be bound by the ties of human relations. Underlying all of this is Matthew’s concern that the Christian leaders of his time must not make the same mistakes as did the Jewish authorities in the days of Jesus. Threat gives way to promise as John signals the imminent arrival of the one who is to come. But there is no escaping the separation which the final judgement will bring.
