Current Events Articles in Biology
[15 points/article]
Timeline: 1 article due on the last day of class (for your period) each month. You must be resourceful and organized to determine these due dates, and you will not necessarily be reminded of them, so it is your responsibility to figure out when each one is due and plan accordingly. You may not submit them early, and you may submit only 1 per month.
Guidelines:
1. Find an article from a recent publication (magazine, newspaper, periodical, or internet source) that relates to biology. [+1 Extra credit point if it relates directly to the unit we are studying]. Copy or clip the article (don’t clip from library materials).
2. Write a 1 paragraph (5-8 sentences) summary of the article. Include important information about what was being studied, what was determined, and why those results might be important. Quoting from the article is acceptable, but most of the paragraph must be your summary, not direct quotes.
3. Write a 1 paragraph (5-8 sentences) reaction to the article. This should consist of your feelings about the discovery, how it relates to biology, how it relates to your life, and how the subject of the article might change things in the future. It is acceptable to draw points from other sources to make your case, as long as you cite your sources.
4. Make a list of 5 vocabulary terms that you were unfamiliar with prior to reading the article, or if 5 cannot be found, choose words that others may not know due to their complexity or specificity. Define each term.
5. Turn in the article (or a copy of it) with your summary/reaction attached.
[+ 2 Extra credit points for giving a ~ 1 minute synopsis and evaluation of the science described in the article aloud in front of the class. This should be prepared, rehearsed, and well presented to earn the extra credit.]
