GOALS AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Narrative fields used to provide the anticipated benefits and goals of the project and the project description.
GOALS: The overall goal of the Sun River Sediment/Temperature Project is to reduce temperatures and sediment loads into Sun and MissouriRivers. The primary goals of this project are to: 1) Improve water quality in the Sun River by meeting temperature and flow targets in the “Water Quality Protection Plan and TMDLs for the Sun River Watershed, December 2004”; 2) Improve water quality and quantity by improving flow monitoring to have a positive impact on all beneficial uses. The project will improve flow conditions in the Sun River and reduce return flows from tributaries to improve overall water quality. The irrigation projects will implement water management improvements for operation spills and aid in sediment loading reduction through flow reductions; and 3)Educate watershed board and citizens of water program.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To achieve the sediment and temperature improvements the project will install four new continuous flow-monitoring sites on key drainages and canals as well as combining the twelve existing monitoring sites to one central web site for improved monitoring. By improving the watershed-monitoring program more water will remain in the Sun River while reducing flow fluctuations, improve water temperatures and reduce polluted return flows.
