Candidates for College/University Representative

There are two candidates for this position. Statements and biographies of each candidate are available below:

Candidate Name: Terry L. Ballman

Candidate for: College/University Representative

Candidate Statement

I would be honored to serve as the college/university representative on the Executive Council of AATSP. I have had the opportunity to work with teachers of all levels throughout my career as a Spanish professor, department chair, methods instructor, lower-division coordinator and student teacher supervisor. During the successful AATSP 2009 Conference in Albuquerque, I was again reminded of what unites our membership: our love for the Spanish and Portuguese languages and their diverse cultures, our commitment to providing excellent educational experiences for our students, and our need to advocate for our profession with the public and our elected officials. In this position I will enthusiastically: a) support the efforts of AATSP to address the needs of our membership, particularly in professional development; b) work within the organization and across others to promote our initiatives, such as the agreement between AATSP and the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española; c) build stronger relationships among university faculty and K-12 teachers. ¡Gracias! Obrigada!

California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, CA

Education and Degrees

• Ph.D. University of Texas at Austin in Hispanic Linguistics (1985)

• M.A. (1981) and B.A. (1976) from California State University Long Beach in Spanish

Teaching and other related work experience

Since 2002 when our new campus first opened its doors to students, I have been the founding faculty member in languages at California State University Channel Islands. I am professor of Spanish and Chair of the Spanish/Languages program and the Communication program. Every summer I take a group of students to study in Mexico. Prior to coming back to my native state I was the Head of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages at Western Carolina University. I also held tenure-track/tenured positions at the University of Northern Colorado, California State University Long Beach and Binghamton University.

My teaching experience includes Spanish language and linguistics courses as well as methods courses for foreign language, ESL and bilingual teachers. I have also coordinated lower-division language programs and supervised student teachers. As a graduate student I taught at the community college level, and one of my most rewarding (and challenging!) experiences was teaching Spanish 1—4 one semester at a local high school.

Recent Publications (2000--)

As CSUCI is a new institution, much of the time that normally would have been spent on research has been dedicated to hiring faculty, broad-based curricular development, outreach to the community including school districts and colleges, and strategic planning. I also served as the Academic Senate Chair for 3 years.

Conference Participation, Including AATSP:

I have presented over 90 papers and workshops at international, national, regional, state and local conferences. I have made numerous presentations at ACTFL, and in the various states I have lived I have presented at regional conferences (SWCOLT, SCOLT, Central States), and at state teacher associations such as CLTA (California), CCFLT (Colorado), FLANC (No. Carolina), and NYSAFLT (New York). I served as the co-editor of CCFLT's journal. I have delivered the keynote at several conferences, including the Hawaii Association of Language Teachers.

I have been a member AATSP since 1985, and given 20 workshops or papers at its conferences, including most recently workshops in Albuquerque, Costa Rica, San Diego, Salamanca, New York and Acapulco. As my presentations emphasize my commitment to promoting pedagogical practices founded on theory and research, the attendees of my workshops are both secondary and college-level teachers. My workshops consistently receive high evaluations. I will present an AATSP-sponsored workshop at ACTFL's annual meeting in November 2009, "Bravo! Acting and Performance Techniques in the Language Classroom."

Candidate for: College/University Representative

Candidate Statement:

In order to attain advanced and superior language proficiency required for life in the 21st century, many stakeholders believe in K-16 fully-articulated programs. Unfortunately the discussion between K-12 and university faculty has been limited. My goal is to foster greater communication among stakeholders, especially the teachers.

I taught for ten years in K-12 schools before moving to higher education. My special focus at all levels has been pedagogy. My doctorate is foreign language education and Hispanic linguistics. My career focus is good teaching for good learning. Teaching styles are as important as learning styles.

I bring my skills as a reviewer to AATSP to guide K-16 discussions about motivating our students to pursue articulated and sequenced studies of Portuguese or Spanish--a seamless journey.

A K-16 collaborative approach to learning will be my focus as a member of the AATSP executive council. I am a member of the K-16 community.
