Job Description

Position Title: Police Officer

Position Grade: F-11

Reports to: Patrol Sergeant or assigned supervisor

Supervises:

General Summary:

Patrols an assigned area of the City in a patrol car, motorcycle, other vehicles or on foot in order to control traffic, investigate citizen's complaints, initiate appropriate action upon viewing hazardous situations, prevent crime or disturbance of the peace, investigates and assists at accident scenes, investigates crimes and arrest violators of statutes and ordinances.

Essential Functions:

1.  Regularly patrols assigned streets and roadways to observe traffic for violators of traffic laws and ordinances, assist stranded motorists, check for wanted vehicles, and/or study traffic patterns. Utilizes radar equipment and visual observation to determine violators and make arrests.

2.  Regularly responds to a variety of citizen complaints, such as breakins, robberies, domestic quarrels, assaults and cases of vandalism. Assists complainants, and if necessary, initiates investigations by interviewing victims and witnesses, gathering evidence on the details of the complaint, and preparing a preliminary investigation report, and follow up as assigned.

3.  Reports to accident scenes to render first aide to injured persons, route traffic around the accident scene, and investigate the cause of the accident. Prepares a report on the details of the accident.

4.  Follows up on preliminary investigation of major complaints and assists in the investigation of major or complex complaints.

5.  Appears in court to testify on investigated cases.

6.  Checks business establishments after normal hours to assure proper security.

7.  Assists in controlling large crowds and in quelling civil disturbances by directing traffic, guarding crowd boundaries, and so on.

8.  Assists in vehicle inspection programs, checking vehicles for mechanical safety.

9.  Assists in the processing of new inmates by searching them, recording and storing their personal effects, and fingerprinting and preparing fingerprint cards. May feed prisoners and make cell checks.

10. Inspects establishments or activities where permit or licenses are necessary for operation, initiating appropriate action if proper authority has not been granted or established standards are not being followed.

11. Serves subpoenas, warrants, and other legal documents.

12. May serve in temporary assignments such as strike duty, working in the Community Relations Unit, special investigative assignments (i.e. WEMET) or performing other special projects as assigned by the Police Chief.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions.

1.  Frequently exposed to weather, including occasional exposure to extreme cold or heat and wet or humid conditions.

2.  Occasionally exposed to vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, radiation, explosives, and toxic/caustic chemicals.

3.  Occasionally required to work in high exposed places.

4.  Occasionally requires lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

5.  Occasionally requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.

6.  Occasionally requires reaching, including overhead reaching.

Qualifications:

1.  Associates Degree or equivalent in Law Enforcement, Police Administration.

2.  MCOLES Certifiable

3.  Ability to make proper physical arrests of resisting suspects.

4.  Qualify in handgun qualifications according to department specifications.

5.  Must demonstrate ability to prepare, write and/or dictate thorough investigation and follow up reports.

6.  Ability and license to drive assigned police vehicles.
