"Faculty Support Packet"

Important Note:

The more material professors have and the more informed they feel, the more they are willing to help. Don't just give them a one-page flyer. That's a big mistake that many schools make. Taking the time to make copies of this packet and giving it to professors will make a huge difference in your turnout.

Here's how to use this packet to your best advantage:

1. Prepare and distribute the first few pages following this cover along with the enclosed testimonials two weeks before the event. Fill in the professor’s name, your name, title, phone number, email address, date, time, and location. Distribute as follows:

  • Personal contact is best. 1-2 weeks before the event speak with the professors you know and personally hand them the packet. Have everyone on the board hand deliver packets to professors who they know. The more you work the contacts your board has with professors, the more likely professors are willing to make attendance mandatory or offer extra credit. Also hand-deliver the packet even to professors who you don't know personally. Be sure to reach all professors who teach large courses.
  • Make sure every speech teacher at the school hears about this event! Often speech teachers make it required for their students to critique other speakers. This is the perfect opportunity for speech students to see a professional speaker in action.
    .
  • Make sure every "freshman year experience," "freshman seminar," or "study skills class" gets a packet. They often make attendance mandatory for their students when they hear about the event.

2. Inform professors via e-mail a few days before the event as a reminder. Use the sample e-mail enclosed.

3. Speak with as many professors as possible. Set a large goal for yourself in terms of the number of professors you will reach. Make copies of this packet. Then go for the goal!

Dear Professor ______:

We are bringing Gary Tuerack, internationally know author and speaker, to campus because of his proven track record for helping students achieve success in school. He has presented this program at Harvard University, Cornell University, MIT, and numerous other leading institutions.
