JOB TITLE: MECHANIC

FOR EVALUATION PURPOSES: 4- Consistently 3- Frequently 2- Occasionally 1- Seldom

q Perform basic mechanical repair work and regular maintenance on school buses and other board owned gas or diesel-powered automotive vehicles/equipment; assure buses conform with established standards for passenger vehicles; complete related maintenance records

q Inspect mechanical defects in school buses, trucks, automobiles, vans, tractors, electric carts and other mechanical equipment as assigned; drive and test school buses and provide emergency road service to disabled District school buses and vehicles as required

q Disassemble motors and repair, adjust and replace parts; recondition and adjust ignition and carburetor systems; repair, fit and adjust valves, pistons, rings and bearings; clean, repair and replace carburetors, fuel pumps, fuel lines, gauges and electrical wiring systems

q Completes all oil changes of buses and board owned vehicles

q Mount all tires on all buses

q Complete bus inspections during the year and class D inspections during the summer

q Repair mechanical defects in a variety of vehicles

q Repair and replace alternators, generators, starters, voltage regulators, distributors and lighting systems; install a variety of parts including batteries, brakes, glass and door handles

q Grind valves and perform welding; rebuild equipment as needed

q Repair and replace heating and ventilation systems on District vehicles; repair and maintain exhaust and fuel systems

q Operate a variety of equipment and machinery including electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, scopes, tire changers, grinders, lathes, emissions analyzer, steam cleaner, hoists, jacks, torches and welding equipment and a variety of power and hand tools

q Respond to service calls and perform emergency repairs as needed

q Perform lubrication, oil changes, battery maintenance, tire changes and servicing of equipment

q Assist in starting buses as needed; assist other mechanics as directed; assist in inventory maintenance as required

q Complete work orders and maintain records of time worked and materials used; recommend purchase of needed parts, supplies and tools

q Maintain work area, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition

q Perform related duties as assigned

q Keeps director of transportation informed on matters of concern

q Observe applicable local, state and federal policies, procedures and guidelines

q Run bus route during day as needed .

q Pick up and discharge students, under varying weather conditions, at established bus stops; report incidents to appropriate administrator(s) which affect the safety of students

q Maintain bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections and driver maintenance

q Fuel and clean exterior of bus paying particular attention to rear windows and bulbs; clean interior of bus including sweeping and mopping floor and cleaning upholstery

q Maintains discipline when students are on the bus and reports undisciplined students to the proper authority

q Performs emergency bus evacuation drills as prescribed by Kentucky Administration Regulations

q Maintain all written records designated by the Director of Transportation, Principal and/or Superintendent

q Utilize two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication

q Maintain CPR and first aid trainings and perform according to established guidelines and procedures

q Transport only those persons designated by the Superintendent and/or board

q Allows only authorized and qualified persons to drive the bus

q Use buses only for purposes authorized by the Superintendent and/or board

q Attends all mandated trainings

q Will be required to complete all required training and attend professional development sessions

q Consistently displays self-control with parents, students and school personnel

q Maintains a clean workstation (bus, desk, office, etc.) and does maintenance as needed

q Be clean, neat and appropriately dressed

q Be consistently responsible and display an attitude of honesty and credibility

q Show enthusiasm, interest and concern for the total program and its efficient operation

q Maintains student control

q Operate equipment in a safe manner at all times

q Demonstrate positive behavior toward the purposes and goals of the Metcalfe County Public Schools

q Maintain regular and punctual attendance
