2015-2016 Classroom Information

Teacher: Mrs. Mariel Calloway

Objective

My goal is to provide students with the necessary foundational algebraic knowledge to be successful in high school mathematics courses using a variety of formats and assessment methods.

Attendance

Regular attendance is especially important in the mathematics classroom because each lesson builds on previously taught skills and concepts.

If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to:

  • ask a fellow student for notes missed; copy and study those notes (outside of class),
  • write down missed assignment(s)
  • ensure completed assignment(s) are submitted within 2 days of the absence
  • askMrs. Calloway for dates/times to make-up a quiz or test, etc.

Any make-up work that is not completed will result in the grade of “0”!!!!

If a student knows of the absence in advance, please inform me.

Homework

  • Homework is assigned on a regular basis. Answers will be given in class. Students will correct their own papers and time will be given for questions/discussion.
  • Homework is usually graded for completion, but sometimes for accuracy, at my discretion. Work must be shown and assignments completed for proper credit.
  • Late homework will not be accepted. This will result in a grade of “0”.
  • Homework and other assignments must enter the room with the student. No passes to lockers will be given.
  • If a student chooses not to complete an assignment or does not have the assignment in the room when class begins, he or she must complete a post-it note with the following information: name, date, assignment and reason. The teacher will collect the post-it during homework check.
  • Homework and assignment information will be posted on the whiteboard.

Supplies for Class

  • Five Subject Notebook with pockets
  • Pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Markers or Colored pencils
  • Pack of colored copy paper
  • Math Fee: $10.00

BRING ALL SUPPLIES TO CLASS DAILY!!!!! No passes to lockers will be given for supplies.

Calculator Usage

Calculators will be used seldomlyin my classroom. Students are encouraged to have a scientific calculator that they are familiar with. These calculators will be used for volume and surface area formulas, irrational square roots, etc. Calculators will not be used for daily mathematical operations. Students may need to brush up on multiplication and division facts. If a student is using a calculator when not allowed, the device will be confiscated and the student will receive the grade of “0”. Please do not use a calculator on homework if one was not used in class.

Cheating

Cheating is against school rules and will not be tolerated in my classroom. If a student is caught cheating, whether on homework, daily work or a test, the student will receive a grade of “0”.The student(s) will also be referred to the administrative office.

NO WORK, NO CREDIT

In my classroom, we operate under the “NO WORK, NO CREDIT” system. Students are required to show work for every problem, no matter how simple. If a student does not show the necessary work for any assignment, he or she will receive the grade of “0”.

Extra Help/Make-Up Tests

Mrs. Calloway will be available for any students that need extra help or need to schedule make up tests on most Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30-7:50, beginning September 1. If you need to attend one of these sessions, please let me know the day before, if possible.

Classroom Rigor

This year, the rigor of the coursework will increase. Students will be expected to work hard and rise to the high expectations of my classroom. I will be incorporating writing into the mathematics classroom. Students should not get discouraged as I strive to prepare them for the next level of mathematics.

Note-taking is vital to success in my classroom. During lecture presentations, students should copy notes, definitions and example problems from the overhead. I will give several types of practice problems each day for students to complete independently; then I will review the solutions with the entire class and allow time for discussion. It is imperative that students participate and ask any questions during class time.
