2017 Overview

Services and Growth

On the support and service side, we continued to facilitate support groups, present Wellness Recovery Action Plan workshops, produce and distribute a monthly newsletter to nearly 300 Peers and to collaborating organizations, and fielded phone calls from individuals looking for help.

2017 Program Highlights

  • Facilitated weekly support groups throughout the year in our Collaboration Zone location with average attendance of 8.2 individuals each.
  • Conducted two 9-week sets of the popular Wellness Recovery Action Plan self-help (WRAP) workshop series. A total of nineteen participants completed the series. Each developed their own wellness plan. Upon completion of the series, the overall post assessment rating for the participants showed an average increase of at least 50% in their overall outlook.
  • Our trained facilitators provided one on one coaching to four individuals this past year.
  • Each week the center was open in 2017 a support group was offered. More than 250 individuals participated throughout the year. Based on respondent’s quarterly surveys, 69% stated that they had improved feelings in wellness categories.
  • As part of ongoing collaboration efforts with other area Mental Health providers, a quarterly survey was sent out to help assess community needs.
  • Produced monthly multi-page, colorful, and informative newsletters that were emailed directly to nearly 300 individuals. Each issue includes the RIM calendar, helpful articles and any important RIM news that members and the community must be apprised of.
  • To promote social activities, each month a free luncheon and “birthday” celebration is hosted at the center. Whenever possible a guest speaker is invited to this event. Topics are often related to community resources members may find interesting. This year more than 90 individuals have taken part in these activities.
  • Groups promoting education such as WRAP Graduate and Financial Literacy were offered each week the center was open in 2017. More than 110 individuals participated in these groups.
  • Groups promoting social interaction and recreation were offered each week the center was open in 2017. More than 50 people have participated in these groups.
  • Groups promoting mindfulness were offered each week the center was open in 2017. More than 50 individuals have participated in these groups.
  • Eleven volunteers completed the Virginia Peer Recovery Specialist Training Course offered at the center this year. Three of the class graduates are now working on their required number of volunteer hours needed to gain full certification here at RIM.

2017 Administrative Highlights

  • A new part-time paid Director was hired in March of 2017.
  • A Blue-Ribbon nominating committee was convened by the Board of Directors. The purpose of this committee is to secure interim and permanent Board members from the community who have the required experience to help the organization thrive and grow.
  • Recovery in Motion was chosen by “Leadership Fredericksburg” as a beneficiary organization. Beginning in December 2017, the Leadership team will begin work with the Director on this initiative.

2017 Outreach Highlights

  • Recovery in Motion joined the Chamber of Commerce in May 2017.
  • In July 2017, the organization was the first ever “Facebook Live” Ribbon Cutting Event for the Chamber receiving more than 1000 likes within 24 hours.
  • In July 2017, RIM was the featured business in the Chamber’s business spotlight magazine.
  • In the fall of 2017 after submitting a report to the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region, RIM was the featured organization in a newsletter written to donors and supporters of the Foundation.
  • In Oct 2017, the Director taped a 30-min radio interview that aired throughout the month of November on local radio stations. This opportunity was made available through the Chamber of Commerce.
  • In November 2017, the Director was the featured speaker at the Spotsylvania County Business Roundtable. The topic was “The Benefits of Peer Support in Recovery.”
  • RIM participated in two community events where we were able to host vendor tables and speak to members in the community about the organization.
  • RIM hosted a workshop titled “Firewalkers” with a presenter from VOCAL Virginia. The workshop was open to the public and participants from as far away as Arlington, VA came to hear the speaker.
  • RIM hosted a free Thanksgiving luncheon for members and will host a free Christmas celebration as well.

2017 Funding and Support Highlights

  • A GoFundMe page was established to raise funds for new technical upgrades.
  • Numerous grant applications were submitted to new funding sources.
  • The organization applied and was accepted to the Local Government Campaign hosted by the Rappahannock United Way.
  • Individual donor contributions were up over last year by 2 % before the year end campaign has even begun.
  • RIM received in kind support from local organizations such as Wegman’s, Harvest Market, Costco, BJ’s, and Giant Foods. These contributions helped offset the costs of some of our events.
  • RIM has received a renewed pledge of support from the local PC users group. This support will come after Jan 1st and will include some new computer hardware.
