REQUIRED TEXT: AS300: The Science of Flight, LE 300 Life Skills and Career Opportunities and Drill and Ceremonies

1.  COURSE DESCRIPTION:

a.  Aerospace Science – AS300: The Science of Flight: This book provides an introduction to the atmosphere and weather elements; the effects of flight on the human body; and basic aeronautics and navigation. The 1st unit, The Aerospace Environment, discusses the atmosphere, weather elements, weather forecasting, and aviation weather. The 2nd unit, Human Requirements of Flight, includes accumulated knowledge about the physiology of flight, protective clothing and equipment in the upper atmosphere, and other limiting factors of flight. The 3rd unit, Principles of Aircraft Flight, discusses the scientific principles of flight power; the operating principles of reciprocating engines, jet engines, and rocket engines; the operating principles of reciprocating engines, jet engines, and rocket engines; the operational concepts of advanced propulsion systems and types of aircraft, rockets and missiles. The 4th unit, Principles of Navigation, provides basic principles of navigation elements, map elements, navigation instruments, and navigation aids.

b.  Leadership Education – LE 300 Life Skills and Career Opportunities: This course focuses on the AFJROTC mission of developing citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and communities. This is accomplished through excellent in citizenship, teaching the values of community service, responsibility, character, and self-discipline. The course is designed to equip students with essential life skills, focusing on educational and career paths. The underlying theme of the course emphasizes that responsibility in life skills supports good citizenship.

2.  COURSE OBJECTIVES:

a.  AS300: The Science of Flight

§  Understand the atmosphere environment

§  Know the basic human requirements of flight

§  Understand why Bernoullis’s principles and Newtons’ Laws of Motion are applied to the theory of flight and the operating principles of reciprocating engines, jet engines, and rocket engines

§  Know the basic elements of navigation, the four basic navigation instruments, and current methods of navigation.

b.  LE 300 Life Skills and Career Opportunities

§  Know specific career options to pursue

§  Know the elements of a personal budget and financial plan

§  Know the requirements for applying to a college or university

§  Know the essential process for pursuing a career

3.  UNIFORM DAY:

Cadets will wear the proper AFJROTC blue uniform as follows:

Monday &Tuesday – Blue shirt (Short sleeve - tie/tie tab: Optional)(Long sleeve – tie/tie tab: Required)

Wednesday – AFAHS approved PT uniform. ONLY! NO EXCEPTIONS!

Thursday – Full Service Dress Uniform; NO EXCEPTIONS!

Friday – Khaki (Tan/light brown) AFAHS Polo

Socks must be solid black; T-shirts must be all white when wearing the blue uniform!

As previously stated, it is MANDATORY that all cadets wear the uniform PROPERLY! Disrespectful wear of the uniform or not wearing the uniform to all classes will result in an inspection score of Zero and/or other administrative action to include demerits, probation or administrative transfer. Refer to the Cadet Guide for additional information.

4.  GRADING PROCESS:

The history portion of the course counts ~40% of the AFJROTC grade. The Leadership Education portion counts ~40%. Drill and Wellness will be ~20% of the AFJROTC grade.

a.  Assessments (Exams, Quizzes, Promotion Test, etc.) 25%

b.  Class/Homework (Chapter Review, Bell Ringer, Participation, etc.) 20%

c.  Uniform Inspections (Proper wear of ANY uniform in/outside of JROTC) 20%

d.  Drill and Ceremony (Military Model, Formation, Lunch, etc.) 10%

e.  PT (Participation in scheduled activities, uniform, etc.) 15%

f.  Executive Function 10%

g.  AFJROTC reserves the right to count participation in the Memorial Day Parade as much as 10% of your grade for the quarter in which those events occur

h.  AFJROTC reserves the right to factor in your attendance in all courses at the AFAHS as part of your AFJROTC grade. If this is done, your attendance will be factored is as follows:

- For every class period you are late, you will be docked 0.3% of your final grade

- For example, if you are late to your Math class three times, your English class five times and your AFJROTC class four times during the quarter, 3.6% will be taken off your quarter grade…So, if your final AFJROTC grade was a 92%, we will reduce the grade to a 88.4%.

1. Each course (AS and LE) will be divided into four parts to correspond with each quarter for the year

- E2C/Presidential Fitness may be interspersed with other traditional gym activities during PT

2. Cadets will read assigned chapters, complete selected chapters in Student Workbook/handouts which correspond to textbook chapters, and participate in other classroom activities.

3. Cadets will be prepared for announced & unannounced quizzes.

4. All cadets will maintain a single subject notebook for taking notes and a two-pocket folder containing the Cadet Handbook, Planner, notebook paper, course syllabus, class handouts, and all quizzes/tests. Notebooks are subject to being graded periodically as part of the homework grade.

5. Drill will consist of individual and group drill. Additionally, cadets will be given the opportunity to help instruct junior class cadets…your grade will be based on skill and attitude during those days.

6. Failing the AFJROTC course is grounds for probation and/or administrative transfer.

a.  A 90 - 100%

b.  B 80 - 89%

c.  C 70 - 79%

d.  D 60 - 69%

e.  F Below 59%

6.  Homework/Make-up Policy:

a.  It is the student's responsibility to find out what work was missed due to class absence. This may be done via your Gradebook account.

b.  Course work will be turned in on the day it is due. Late work may have 10% of the possible points deducted

c.  For every day you are sick or have an excused absence, you will have one extra day to turn in your work without it being considered late.

d.  Cadet will have the opportunity to retake quizzes/exams until he/she earns a passing grade
