New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) seeks a dynamic individual for the position of Staff Attorney to work on its Domestic Violence Advocacy Project in Portsmouth.
Position Responsibilities: Representlow-income victims/survivors ofdomestic violence, sexual assault and stalking in emergency civil cases including protective orders, emergency child custody,administrative hearings and other legal cases; community engagementand education, including building partnerships with local police departments, courts, crisis centers, and culturally specific community groups. Travel within the state and to national conferences will be necessary.
NHLA’s Background: Recognized nationally for our achievements, NHLA has a proud history of aggressive, creative advocacy for low-income and elderly clients in federal and state courts, as well as legislative and administrative forums. Because NHLA does not receive federal Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funding, we are not subject to LSC’s restrictions on lobbying, class action litigation or welfare reform work. NHLA’s resources are primarily focused on housing, health, income benefits, elder law, domestic violence, and public utilities. NHLA operates five branch law offices and a number of statewide projects. NHLA’s Domestic Violence Advocacy Projectrepresentsvictims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking in family court and other related proceedings.
Position Qualifications:New Hampshire license or willingness to take the next scheduled bar examination, or eligibility for admission on motion. Strong oral and written communication skills and attention to detail; community engagement skills including commitment and ability to work with diverse groups of people, organizations, systems and multiple stakeholders; a team player who can work independently and demonstrate initiative. Preference is given to those demonstrating a commitment to civil rights, economic justice,and working with low-income people. Experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence, Latina/o survivors, survivors of gender based violence, and other traditionally underserved populations a plus.

NHLA has offices in Berlin, Claremont, Manchester, Concord, and Portsmouth. This particular staff position will be based inManchester with travel throughout the southern tier of the state.
