Students brought home a permission slip for our upcoming field trip to the Baltimore Museum of Industry on November 7th. The cost of the field trip $33. If you are interested in chaperoning, please indicate on the bottom of the permission slip. I will only be needing four chaperones. Chaperones will be selected randomly through a drawing.

If you would like to purchase pictures and did not send in an order form, you will have the opportunity to purchase pictures online when the proofs have been sent home. I can no longer collect picture order forms and money.

Class Updates

In Writing, students started their graphic organizer for their next writing assignment. Students will be writing an opinion piece. They could choose one of the following topics: the best season, the best subject, the best way to read, and the best genre to read. Students have to use reasons and details to support their answer.

In Reading, students identified the main idea of an article on the Philadelphia Mint. Students identified the key details in the story to help them determine the main idea.

In Math, we read the book Amanda Bean's Amazing Dream. Students identified how they could use multiplication in the story and created their own story problems that went along with the illustrations in the book.

In Social Studies, we read the book The Big Green Pocketbook. Students identified the goods and services mentioned in the book. We sorted cards with images of goods provided by the government or businesses. Students wrote down the sorted goods into a venn diagram.

Class Updates

In Reading, students identified all of the definitions of "mint". We read an article about the Philadelphia Mint. Students identified what details in the article helped them identify which definition of "mint" went along with the story.

In Writing, students finished up putting their flip books together on the deadliest predators.

In Math, students created arrays to go along with word problems that involved multiplication. We continued writing the equations to go along with the arrays. Student identified what each number in the equation represents and what the product represents.

In Science, students finished up their experiments with their puff mobiles. We discussed reasons for why the winning puff mobiles went the furthest and with the fewest puffs. Students conducted three trials today to see how far their puff mobile went with one breath.

Class Updates

In Science, students designed and built a puff mobile. This mobile could be made from paper clips, paper, lifesaver mints, tape and straws. The mobile could only be moved by blowing on it. We tested our mobiles in the All Purpose Room with the other third grade classes. We wanted to see how many puffs it took for the puff mobile to travel nine feet and how far the puff mobile went with one puff.

During Computers, students added photographs of great white sharks, praying mantises and crocodiles using Clip Art on Microsoft Word to their flip books.

In Math, students created arrays to represent word problems. Students wrote the equations for the array and explained what each number in their equation represented in relation to the word problem.

In Reading, students read an National Geographic article called "The Life of Larvae". Students identified that the text was organized as a sequence of events. They began creating a foldable for the three stages of a larva.

Class Updates

Students attended an Anti-Bullying Assembly.

In Reading, students used evidence from the text to support their answer when answering questions about orphaned elephants.

In Math, students used multiplication to solve area.

Third grade took a team picture with our visualization bubbles that we made on Wednesday for our favorite scene from our favorite book.

In Social Studies, students sorted cards that contained pictures of services in the Roman Republic and in the U.S. today. Students were able to sort them into many categories including, services provided by the government or services provided by business, and services from today or services from the Roman Republic. We compared similarities and differences between services in the Roman Republic and the United States today.

Class Updates

In Writing, students continued typing their final draft of their flip book on the deadliest predators.

In Reading, students read an article in National Geographic about orphaned elephants. Students created a cause and effect brochure identifying the causes and effects.

Students went to Art today.

In Math, students measured area by tiling unit squares, and using repeated addition and multiplication.

In Social Studies, students identified services provided by the government and are paid for by taxes. We watched a video about the services the government in the Roman Republic provides and compared them to the services our government provides.
