Monday: 1/23/2012
No School / Teacher Workday / Guided Reading- “The Stormi Giovanni Club”-**Mostly during Thunderbird Time this week**
·  Phonics-word study (Cultural Words) Students will write words they know in KNOW section and unknown words in UNKNOWN section (AIMSWEB KIDS).
·  Writing-Students will identify Indefinite & Reflective Pronouns and after teacher guided lesson, students will write an advice column to offer advice to the characters from “The Stormi” story.
·  Comprehension: Leveled Reader Story with graphic organizer provided. Students will use good reader charts to fill in the graphic organizer.
·  Vocabulary: Students will go back through story and find words that were more difficult to understand creating a “before and after” chart. They will find an antonym/synonym for each unfamiliar word as well point out the sentences that help with understanding of that unknown word.

PDSA Review: Classifying Genres- on Elmo
Lesson: Students will work with teams to assign parts for the reading of “Stormi” and start rehearsing. Students will need to read through it a least once taking notes on their characters actions for their activity.
Activity: Students will create a “character map man” for the character they were assigned for the play.
Low-levels will work w/group members and assistance will be provided if needed/Also provided a character trait chart. / Writer’s Workshop-Students will pretend they are an advice columnist for their school paper. A new 5th grader has asked them for advice on how to make new friends. The student has told you his or her interests. Write a letter of advice to this student. *When finished, design a “welcome poster” listing 5 Helpful Hints for a new student coming to your school for the first time.
Independent Reading-Low-levels will be sent to Guided Reading during this center-Students will choose what they would like to read, and using good reader notes and journals, take notes on personal reading. Student journals to note genre, main idea and supporting details, as well as any character traits and setting, plot, and time period (hand in at the end of center).

PDSA Review: Library Genres handout
Lesson: Spelling/Definition Test for “Stormi”-Reader Response-share out-Students will then listen to recording of play-stop at intervals for probing questions and note taking-discussion on main idea, examples of tone, author's purpose, and clue words and phrases that help to identify main idea. Students will also need to note any changes to their character traits on their charts to add then into their acting.
Activity: Students again rehearse their scene of the play to prepare for tomorrow.
Low-levels will work w/me at 10 minute intervals to work on comprehension using graphic organizers and this week’s leveled reader. / Reader’s Workshop: Students will work with groups to complete guided reading task cards on Tuesday and Wednesday. Items to include on task card are: Identifying character traits, Identifying Elements of Plot, and Structures of a drama Lows will be with me during this time to use comprehension graphic organizers to answers the tasks from task card.
Technology: Students will use library and/or classroom computers to do research for their Presidential Projects. Students are reminded to not stop researching for important facts just because outline if finished, reminded to “keep digging.” Students are to complete note cards for bibliographical purposes to be used at later time for classroom lesson on writing a bibliography. Lows will be helped with this by Mrs. Stewart as well as myself to help identify source information and certified website information.

PDSA Review: Book List sort on Elmo
Activity: Students will perform the play of “Stormi Giovanni.” Afterwards, students will need to address the Reader Response Question and prepare for share-outs. Low-Levels will be actively involved in this assignment given the assigned role for their scene. / Word Study: Week 4 on spelling card (complete a blackout card.) Students are to complete 1 square on card as well as a free response choice (students create their own activity to use to study vocabulary words. Free response choice MAY NOT be the same as a previous week’s choice. Lows have had no trouble with this activity but assigned words may be different depending on awareness of phonics.
