What’s the big deal about underage drinking? According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, kids who drink are more likely to:

·  Be victims of violent crimes.

·  Engage in risky sexual behavior

·  Have serious problems in school.

·  Be involved in drinking related traffic accidents

·  Develop alcohol dependence

According to the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS), Greene County youth age 12-17 reported higher alcohol use than neighboring counties and the state: Roughly 37% reported using alcohol within the past 30 days. Our kids are trying to tell us something. Teen MISSION strives to prevent and/or reduce the early initiation and regular use of alcohol among middle to high school youth. The MAGIC Moments Newsletter gives a complete list of alcohol-free social and recreational opportunities for youth and families. These events and activities provide healthy alternative activities that keep our youth safe and alcohol-free. It is important to promote and participate in community activities that support Our Youth,. Our Neighborhood. Our MISSION.

READING AND WRITING CLINIC:

Waynesburg University will be hosting a Free Reading and Writing Clinic for local students in Kindergarten through the Sixth Grade. The clinic will be held from 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning on February 14th and ending on April 20th on the 3rd Floor of Miller Hall (51 W. College Street, Waynesburg). This one-on-one tutoring instruction will be offered by students from the university. Interested parents must call Dr. Joan Henderson at 724-852-3383 or email her at to reserve a tutoring space.

ADULT COMPUTER CLASSES:

February 17, 24 and March 3 and 10 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM the Flenniken Public Library (102 E. George Street, Carmichaels) will be offering a series of five free adult computer classes. The first class took place on February 10th and that class dealt with how to use a mouse. The topics of the remaining four classes are as follows: “Microsoft Vista,” “Beginning Internet,” “Microsoft Word 2007,” and “Signing Up for an E-Mail Account.” Please call the library at 724-966-5263 to register.

1-2-3 LEARN WITH ME:

February 18th is the deadline to register for the CELL (Center for Early Literacy Learning) Training. The training focuses on evidence-based practices for promoting literacy development of infants, toddlers and preschoolers and will take place on March 1st with sign-in at 9 AM and the workshop running from 9:30 AM to 3 PM at the Jefferson-Baptist Church (177 South Pine Street in Jefferson). There will be light refreshments and lunch provided along with door prizes. This Greene County Professional Development Opportunity is sponsored by the LICC (Local Interagency Coordinating Council) of Greene County and the CEG (Community Engagement Team) of MAGIC. BASEBALL REGISTRATIONS:

After January 31st the 2011 Waynesburg Baseball Registration will be available. “UNBIRTHDAY PARTY”:

February 18th from 4 PM to 8 PM the Family Literacy Department and the Children’s Department of the Bowlby Public Library (311 N. West Street, Waynesburg) invites children of all ages and their family members to a very special “Unbirthday Party.” This event will feature playing traditional unbirthday party games, sharing an unbirthday cake and other snacks plus making a special unbirthday craft. SPRINGTIME STORYHOUR REGISTRATION:

MINING TRAINING PROGRAM:

February 17th is the deadline to register for a new miner training program being offered in Waynesburg at the Westmoreland County Community College’s Greene County Education Center. This four day class will run from February 21 -24 --8 AM to 4:30 PM --and is open to all Pennsylvania residents who hold a high school diploma or GED and interested in becoming a miner. The course will be taught by a certified and licensed instructor. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate of training issued by the Department of labor. The program cost is $275 and includes tuition, textbooks, equipment, materials and lunch. Partial scholarships may be available. The classes will be held at the WCCC Greene County Education Center located at 100 EverGreene Drive in Waynesburg. STRONG WOMEN EXERCISE CLASS:

February 21st until April 13th Penn State Cooperative Extension Services will be continuing to offer the Strong Women Exercise class every Monday and Wednesday from 5 Pm to 6 PM for a period of 12 weeks. The program focuses on preventing osteoporosis and keeping women healthy and strong. The fee is $50 for the series and the classes will be held at the Penn State Cooperative Extension Offices located at 26 W. High Street in Waynesburg. For more information please call 724-627-3745.

SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM:

February 22nd from 10 AM to 11:30 AM the Summer Food Service Program Task Group meeting will take place at Westmoreland County Community College/Greene County Education Center (100 EverGreene Drive, Waynesburg). Anyone who is interested in participating in the planning of the Summer Food Service Program for Greene County is invited to attend.

GREENE COUNTY PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB:

February 22 at 7 PM the Greene County Photo Club will meet at the Waynesburg Bible Chapel (800 E. Greene Street, Waynesburg) for their monthly meeting. This month’s program topic: “From Point & Shoot through SLR—Turn off Automatic.” New members are always welcome . (Next meeting will take place on March 22 and the topic will be: “Shooting in RAW.”).

PRODUCE TO PEOPLE:

February 24th from 10 AM to noon the Produce to People distribution will be held at the Greene County Fairground (this distribution usually falls on the 4th Thursday of the month). Free food distributions are available to all eligible persons. All participants are requested to please bring their own bags or boxes for packing their items. No proof of income or residency is required at this distribution, however everyone must sign a self-declaration of need form at the distribution site. No one may pick up food for another person unless pre-authorized at the Salvation Army. If you have any questions, please call Sister Audrey Quinn at 724-852-1479. SKATE AND DANCE:

February 15, March 11 and March 25 from 6 PM to 9 PM (admission $5) will be the skate hours and from 9 PM to 11 PM (admission $4) will be the dance hours for this event. Location: Mon View Park Roller Rink (377 Stoney Hill Road, Greensboro). Admission for attending both skate and dance will be $8.00. USED BOOK SALE AND READING EXTRAVAGANZA:

February 26th from 8 AM to 2 PM the Central Greene Education Association and the Central Greene School District (CGSD) Relay for Life Team is hosting a used book sale and reading extravaganza in the Waynesburg Central High School Cafeteria at 30 Zimmerman Drive, Waynesburg. Book prices: 50 cents for paperbacks and $1.00 for hardbacks. The day will also feature guest readers, special activities for children and a bake sale. LOOK GOOD…FEEL BETTER:

February 28, March 28, April 25, May 23 and June 27 from 10 AM until noon are the dates set for the Look Good…Feel Better program. This is a free program for women in cancer treatment. These workshops are facilitated by trained cosmetologists who teach women with cancer how to understand and care for changes in skin and hair that may occur during treatment. The program is offered by the American Cancer Society in partnership with Personal Care Products Council Foundation and the Professional Beauty Association/National Cosmetology Association. PAVING THE PATH TO KINDERGARTEN:

February 28, March 28, April 18, May 23 and June 27 are the scheduled dates for the 5 FREE sessions which focus on helping to prepare your child for school. The sessions will be held at the Waynesburg Family Center (1505 Morris Street in Waynesburg) and will take place from 10 AM until 11:30 AM with the exception of the last session on June 27th (which will run from 11 AM to 1 PM). PARTY HEARTY ZUMBATHON CHARITY EVENT:

February 28th from 5 PM to 8 PM the Center for the Performing Arts (200 W. George Street in Carmichaels) will be holding a special event to benefit the American Heart Association. The cost is $20 per ticket, which would be considered your personal donation to the American Heart Association. Additional donations will be appreciated. Also, upon picking up your tickets, you will be given a petition sheet and envelopes. Each dancer has a chance to raise additional money for the cause for each hour that they dance. Sponsors will pay any chosen dollar amount per hour danced by the dancer. Whoever raises the most donated money on their petition sheet will win one month free of Zumba classes at the Center for the Performing Arts. GRANDPARENTS AND RELATIVES AS CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP:

February 28th from 5:30 PM to 7 PM the Grandparents and Relatives as Caregivers Support Meetings will be held at the CARE Center located at 35 S. West Street in Waynesburg. This support group welcomes grandparents or relatives age 45 and over who are raising grandchildren or another relative’s children. The group will continue to meet on the 4th Monday of each month from 5:30 PM to 7 PM offering an opportunity for grandparents and relative care givers to come together and provide mutual support and advocacy for each other. These workshops are designed specifically to meet the needs of grandparents, relatives and other non-parental caregivers who are parenting related & non-related children. Topics include child and adolescent development, discipline and guidance, acknowledgement of ambivalent feelings, rebuilding a family, living with teens, legal issues and advocacy. Children are also invited and child care along with activities will be provided. There will also be refreshments. CHAMBER WORKS I:

March 3 from noon until 1 PM in Room 108 of Benedum Hall on the Waynesburg University campus the Music Program will present their spring concert. Admission is free and everyone is invited to bring their lunch and enjoy diverse instrumental and vocal musical talents during this one hour long concert.

MASTER GARDENING TRAINING CLASSES:

March 3 through May 17th the Penn State Cooperative Extension Service (26 W. High Street/Lower Level/Waynesburg) will host the new Master Gardeners’ Course every Thursday from 6 PM to 9 PM. INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS:

March 4, 11, 18 and 25 beginning at 10 AM the Bowlby Public Library will offer a Beginner’s Introduction to Computers class. Participants will learn the basic names and parts of a computer, how to browse the world wide web and create an email address.
