Post: Volunteer Coordinator

Base: Sickle Cell Society Headquarters- 54 Station Road London NW10 4UA

Reports to: tbc (ONE OF THE EXISTING STAFF TEAM)

Tenure: Fixed term appointment for 6 months ( post will be reviewed after 6 months)

Status: Volunteer role

Role Purpose

Community Volunteers are vital to the work of the Sickle Cell Society. They help us in many ways such as increasing awareness and understanding of sickle cell, involving local people with the work of the Society and raising much needed funds to help us improve the lives of individuals with sickle cell and their families.

The role of the Volunteer Coordinator is to take responsibility and leadership in developing and growing the number of volunteers, enabling them to have a positive experience in supporting the work of the Society. The main areas of focus are;

·  Events

·  Annual Children’s holiday

·  Community outreach

·  HQ office support

·  10k/5k runs/walks, Marathons and cycling events

·  Social media activity

·  Fundraising

The volunteer will be supported by the SCS CEO and staff.

Key responsibilities

·  To set up a Volunteer Steering Group

·  To lead on the recruitment process for motivated people with appropriate skills to support the SCS in its work activities, including CRB and other checks.

·  To show leadership by developing, motivating and monitoring volunteers in their work and to enable them to do their best

·  To ensure volunteers are appropriately deployed to the activities that best match their interests and skill set

·  To maintain records ( data base and excel spreadsheet work) of all work undertaken by volunteers

·  To overhaul the current SCS volunteer system and improve processes for recruiting new volunteers

·  To brief volunteers on their roles and ensure they have relevant and up to date information

·  To liaise regularly with volunteers and to organise an annual celebration event for SCS volunteers

Person Specification

·  Educated to degree level

·  Experience of working with volunteers and/or in the Charity sector

·  Knowledge about sickle cell and the SCS

·  Good interpersonal skills

·  Computer/IT literate eg word, power point, excel

·  Experience of budgets -desirable

·  Good communication skills – written and oral

·  Good organisational skills

·  An ability to work independently but with support and guidance from SCS staff

·  Reliable and honest
