Battle of New Orleans Quilt Activity
Directions: Students will use the information they have learned in class about the Battle of New Orleans to make a 9 square quilt.
Follow the instructions below:
SQUARE TOPICS:
** ANY & ALL WRITING ON THE QUILT MUST BE DONE IN MARKER, COLORED PENCIL OR CRAYON TO ATTRACT ATTENTION** Do NOT use just pen or pencil. This is a major point deduction.
1. Map of Southern Louisiana. Label and color the following areas: Chalmette, New Orleans and the Mississippi River. CENTER SQUARE.
2. Map of country doing the attacking. Include 3 past encounters that this country has had with the U.S. or with Louisiana. Draw 2 pictures that would represent this country. TOP LEFT SQUARE.
3. Map of country being attacked. Trace the Mississippi River in blue and label it. Label Louisiana and shade it in a bright color. Label the Gulf of Mexico and shade it blue. Draw 2 pictures to represent this country. TOP RIGHT SQUARE.
4. President of the U.S. at the time and 3 facts about this president. Include a picture of this person. MIDDLE LEFT SIDE.
5. Name of the American General. Include a 3 to 5 sentence biography about this person. Paste a picture of him. MIDDLE RIGHT SIDE.
6. Name of the English General. Include a 3 to 5 sentence biography about this person. Paste a picture of him. BOTTOM LEFT.
7. A square about Jean Lafitte the leader of Barataria Bay. Include a picture of him and a 3 to 5 sentence biography section. BOTTOM RIGHT.
8. Date of the battle and a GENERAL LOCATION & a SPECIFIC LOCATION. Explain in a short paragraph why Jackson chooses this location. TOP MIDDLE.
9. Draw a picture of the battle and write 5 facts about the battle. BOTTOM MIDDLE.
10. Group Member’s Names should be on the back. Next to each person’s name write exactly what YOU did to contribute to this project.
**When putting together the quilt, make sure you put the quilt squares in the correct places. I will take off points for not following directions.** Glue to different color sheets of construction paper. Attach the construction paper together from the back with tape.
DO NOT FORGET:
-Use different colors of construction paper to glue each square on.
-Only use colored markers, crayons and pencils.
-Write large enough that it is easy to read and legible.
-NEATNESS COUNTS!
