Super Speed Math

Super Speed Math will be an essential part of our weekly homework. The goal is to enhance math fact fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We will be focusing on certain math facts each week. It is expected that every day, the student will complete two rounds of an oral, timed Super Speed Math challenge and record the times in their Agenda’s.
How to do Super Speed Math (The Home Version):
Each Monday, students will receive two new sheets for Super Speed Math. There will be a student sheet with no answers and a parent sheet with answers. These papers do not need to travel back and forth to school, however they should be kept in a consistent place at home for use throughout the entire week. Additional copies may be given upon request if the paper is lost.
The parent will need a stopwatch for this activity (many smart phones have this as an option!). As quickly as possible, the student orally solves the questions on the test; while the parent checks the answers. The student must read the problem out loud in addition to the answer. Say “two plus six is twelve” rather than just “twelve”. This helps students to see it, hear it, think it, and say it. Do not skip this step!
Emphasize to your student that “helpsies” are not only allowed but encouraged. If the child does not know an answer, the parent makes a dot on the troublesome problem on the answer sheet and immediately helps the child. The child will go back two problems and continue saying their facts.
Students must complete all the problems on the sheet. As soon as the student states the last correct answer, the parent should record the final time in the student’s agenda and then review missed problems with dots. The student’s only focus is on improving his or her fastest time and accuracy. Students are racing against themselves, which is the fairest race of all!
Students, because they are slowed down when they are corrected, soon understand that studying the problems on the answer sheet with the most dots is the best way to improve their personal records.
